Former President Donald Trump visited Myrtle Beach to support Senate candidate Darline Graham, aiming to bolster her campaign ahead of Tuesday’s Republican primary runoff. The rally on Friday night followed Graham’s recent debate performance where she acknowledged being uninformed on national security matters, a point Trump indirectly addressed by highlighting her reverence for the military and acknowledging her lack of political experience.

Trump emphasized Graham’s commitment to supporting the military, recalling a conversation with her two days after the debate. He stated that Graham, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, wants to ensure the military is well-cared for. This intervention comes at a critical time for Graham, who has not held public office previously, as she faces nine-year House veteran Representative Ralph Norman for the GOP nomination.

The former president’s full-court press for Graham also carries implications for his own influence within the Republican Party. His endorsement and active campaigning for Graham follow a series of losses for his preferred candidates in recent Florida House GOP primaries and Wyoming’s gubernatorial GOP primary. In the initial South Carolina election, over 60% of Republican voters chose a candidate other than Trump’s first pick, further raising questions about his sway.

During the rally, Trump urged supporters to vote for Graham as if he were on the ballot, acknowledging that voter turnout for a Senate runoff in a non-presidential election year can be challenging. Myrtle Beach residents attending the rally expressed mixed opinions. Scott Feneley, a 67-year-old retiree, indicated he was undecided, leaning towards Norman due to concerns about Graham’s inexperience. Louis Brust, a 69-year-old real estate agent, also remained undecided, stating he would see how the night progressed.

Other attendees, like Donna Calvert, a 69-year-old retiree from Murrells Inlet, acknowledged Graham’s debate struggles but expressed confidence in her due to Trump’s backing. Graham herself addressed her lack of political experience at the rally, likening her campaign to Trump’s own entry into politics. She also asserted a tougher stance on illegal immigration than her late brother, stating that those in the country illegally must leave.

Trump also used the rally to reflect on the legacy of Senator Lindsey Graham, noting that Joint Base Charleston had been renamed Joint Base Lindsey Graham in his honor. He praised the late senator as a fierce defender of the military and congratulated Darline Graham and her family on the recognition.
