The Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship is currently underway this week, bringing a significant economic uplift to businesses across the Grand Strand. This major sporting event draws thousands of participants to the Myrtle Beach area, providing a crucial financial boost as the peak summer tourism season concludes.

Organizers report that approximately 3,000 players have traveled to the Grand Strand for the tournament. These competitors represent all 50 states and more than 20 countries, and they are competing on over 50 local golf courses. The influx of these players and their families is seen by golf courses and other businesses as a substantial economic benefit.

Shawn Burns, the head golf professional at Myrtlewood Golf Club, noted the positive impact, stating it is good for retail and provides a necessary boost for the golf industry itself. The timing of the tournament is particularly important for many business owners, as late August and early September typically mark a slower transition period for coastal tourism. The event helps to conclude the season strongly.

The tournament is scheduled to run through Friday, culminating in a championship round where multiple champions will be crowned.
