MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Myrtle Beach Police Department says the person seen in an online video whipping a marked patrol car around other drivers at night was a civilian worker, not a sworn officer, and that the employee has been disciplined.

Department leaders said the staff member was driving the cruiser to a shop to have technology equipment put in when the video was recorded.

The employee has been identified, and a supervisor dealt with the matter and took corrective action, police said. The department did not spell out what that action was, and it has not released the worker’s name.

In a statement shared on social media, the department called the driving unacceptable and said it put other people on the road at risk. Police added that the behavior fell below the standards the agency and the City of Myrtle Beach set for staff.

It remains unclear when or where in the city the video was taken. Department leaders said they view the episode as serious and expect staff to answer for conduct like this.
