MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Coastal Horry County, including Myrtle Beach, is under a coastal flood advisory until 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, after forecasters stretched the alert through the evening high tide.

The National Weather Service office in Wilmington, N.C., updated the advisory at 2:35 a.m. It calls for as much as a foot of saltwater over normally dry ground in low spots near the shore. Causeways that carry traffic to and from the beaches are expected to see minor flooding, as are low roads beside the Intracoastal Waterway and the tidal creeks that feed it.

A beach hazards statement also runs from 6 a.m. through this evening. Forecasters expect a strong longshore current pushing from north to south and a moderate rip current risk. That kind of current can drag swimmers and surfers toward piers and jetties.

Flooding could spread past the usual trouble spots if heavy rain or strong wind lines up with high tide, the advisory notes. Drivers should leave extra time and turn around at barricades or standing water of unknown depth, and beachgoers should check with lifeguards before going in.
