MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Voters in Myrtle Beach, across the Grand Strand and in the Pee Dee are sending Republican Russell Fry back to Washington for a third term, preliminary results from Tuesday show.

With about 90% of ballots counted, the race was called for the incumbent shortly after 9 p.m. Fry had 55.2% of the vote, or 150,314 ballots. Democrat John Vincent, a retired U.S. Navy command master chief who owns a small business, drew roughly 44.8%.

That margin is far closer than two years ago, when Fry took about 71.4% of the vote and his Democratic opponent finished with 28.46%.

In a statement after the call, Fry said the district had firmly rejected the Democratic message. Vincent had campaigned on ending trade wars and the war with Iran and on lifting the Social Security income cap.

Fry, a Murrells Inlet resident and Eagle Scout, practiced law on the Grand Strand for more than a decade. Before Congress he spent seven years in the South Carolina House representing District 106 in Horry County, where he served as chief majority whip.
