Washington D.C. Faces H-1B Visa Debate as Supporters and Critics Clash!
Ah, the age-old debate on immigration is heating up once again in the good old U.S. of A! The hot topic? The H-1B visa program, a pathway for US companies to bring in skilled workers from abroad. What are H-1B Visas, Anyway?
H-1B visas have been around since 1990 and typically last for three years, with the possibility of extending up to six. Every year, there’s a limit (or cap) on the number of new H-1B visas issued, currently set at 85,000. Out of those, 20,000 are saved specifically for foreign students who’ve got their master’s degrees or higher from US universities. However, there’s a loophole! Some institutions like universities and non-profit research groups can snag a few more, meaning the actual number could be higher.
One interesting thing to remember is that only applicants with a job offer from a US-based employer can even consider applying for this visa. And if you’re already in the US and need a visa extension? No problem, the government is usually on board with that!
The Numbers Game
In the latest numbers for the 2023 fiscal year (which runs from October 2022 to September 2023), over 386,000 H-1B visa applications were approved. Out of those, nearly 119,000 were new visas. However, that’s quite a drop from the previous year, which saw a whopping 474,000 approvals.
Back in 2017, a previous administration put some extra scrutiny on H-1B applications, and guess what? Rejection rates skyrocketed! They hit an all-time high of 24% in the 2018 fiscal year compared to just 5-8% during the prior administration. Interestingly, the approval rates have somewhat leveled off in recent years, with a similar number of applications being accepted under the current administration.
Surge in Applications
Now, it appears demand is ramping up! Preliminary figures for the 2024 fiscal year indicate a significant rise in applications, jumping to 758,994. It looks like folks want those H-1B visas more than ever! With the former president set to return to the White House in January, opinions are divided on how this immigration issue might shake out going forward.
Big Players and Big Salaries
So, who’s benefiting from these visas? A whopping 65% of applicants approved for H-1B visas in 2023 were in technology-related jobs! The likes of Amazon, Google, Meta, and Apple are among the top employers hiring H-1B workers. Guess who grabbed the number one spot? That’s right, Amazon brought on over 13,000 new H-1B employees! Meanwhile, the median annual salary for H-1B visa holders was a neat $118,000, which is even more than the median salary for computer science folks in the country.
It’s important to note that while some argue these international employees take away jobs from American workers, many H-1B holders are reportedly earning more than the average wage for their roles according to the Department of Labor. For instance, if a software engineer in Washington D.C. can command a certain salary, then companies need to meet or exceed that to sponsor an H-1B applicant. So, they aren’t exactly undercutting wages!
A Closer Look
Most H-1B visa holders hail from India, making up about 72% of all approvals, followed by China at 12%. And get this, the average age of H-1B workers is around 33. It’s mainly men that are securing these visas, with 70% of the approved applicants being male.
What Lies Ahead?
As the debate over H-1B visas continues, both sides are gearing up for what could be a defining moment in American immigration policy. With the amount of applications soaring, the critical question remains: will the focus shift towards prioritizing American workers, or will the system revert back to favoring employers? One thing’s for sure, the discussions around H-1B visas are far from over.
