Myrtle Beach Prepares for Icy Weather and Potential Snowfall

Snow-covered beach in Myrtle Beach.

News Summary

Myrtle Beach is set to experience unusually cold temperatures next week, with the possibility of snow. The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook, indicating that residents should prepare for icy conditions and fluctuating temperatures. As temperatures are expected to drop significantly, those with travel plans should stay updated on road conditions. This rare winter event may surprise many residents as they brace for the wintry weather ahead.

Myrtle Beach Braces for Chilly Weather and Possible Snow Next Week

Well, Myrtle Beach residents, it looks like we’re in for a chilly surprise next week! The Grand Strand is gearing up for some unusually cold temperatures that might just include a bit of snow on Tuesday and Wednesday. Those of you who enjoy a winter wonderland might want to keep your snow boots handy!

A Frosty Forecast Ahead

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Horry County and surrounding areas, indicating that we could need a Winter Weather Advisory for some wintry precipitation. That’s right, folks! While snow is more of a rarity here in Myrtle Beach, it’s not completely unheard of. Just think back to the notorious Winter Storm Grayson that graced us with its presence back in 2018.

Current forecasts show that Monday will be a cold yet sunny day with highs resting in the upper 30s Fahrenheit. If you’re planning to venture out, just know that the temperature will be dipping down to around 20 degrees come nighttime. And it doesn’t stop there! Tuesday is shaping up to be a bit dreary with partial sun in the morning but a 40% chance of snow later in the afternoon. Highs will hover in the mid-30s, so dressing in layers is definitely a smart move.

Snow and Icy Conditions on the Horizon

As Tuesday night rolls around, temperatures will plummet to the low 20s, bringing with it a 50% chance of snow in central Horry County and even a 60% chance along the coast. So if you’ve got evening plans, you might want to prepare for some potential slushy roads. Wednesday is expected to continue the winter festivities with another 50% chance of snow across the county, and we’re not talking about a massive snowball fight here—highs will be in the low 30s.

Then, just when you think it can’t get any colder, we’ll have nighttime temperatures dropping to around 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Brrr! Keep those cozy blankets close, folks! By Thursday, it seems like we’ll catch a break, with temperatures climbing up into the low 40s and partly sunny skies, which is a welcome change after this icy blast.

That Arctic Chill is Coming!

Looking ahead, residents should brace themselves for a prolonged blast of Arctic air starting on Sunday night and lingering until Thursday. Daytime highs might not even rise above freezing on both Tuesday and Wednesday, leading to over 48 consecutive hours of below-freezing temperatures. This is the real deal, and gusty winds could even plunge wind chill factors into the single digits, making it feel even colder.

With Winter Weather Advisories and possibly some extreme cold warnings on the horizon, it’s crucial to plan ahead. Traveling could be tricky, especially with potential impacts stretching from deep South Texas on Monday, through the Gulf Coast on Tuesday, and finally into our very own coastal Carolinas late Tuesday and Wednesday. So if you’ve got places to be, make sure to check those road conditions!

What Kind of Precipitation to Expect?

As we gear up for this chilly spell, it’s important to note that the type and amount of wintery precipitation we experience still remain uncertain. Depending on the storm track, we could see accumulating snow and ice, or we might end up facing freezing rain and sleet. The most likely timeframe for snow impacts will be late Tuesday through Wednesday, so keep your eyes peeled for updates!

As the weather unfolds next week, we encourage everyone to stay tuned for the latest updates. It’s going to be quite the wintery ride, Myrtle Beach, and we’re all in this together! Whether you love snow or dread it, at least now you know what to expect!
