Myrtle Beach Marathon: What You Need to Know!

If you’re in Myrtle Beach, get ready for a bustling weekend as the Myrtle Beach Marathon is set to take place on March 1. This energetic event will draw more than 4,000 runners, all enthusiastic to lace up their sneakers and hit the pavement! However, along with the excitement of the marathon, we want to give you a heads up about road closures and possible traffic delays that might affect your plans.

Road Closures: What to Expect

The Myrtle Beach Downtown Alliance has recently announced a series of road closures in downtown Myrtle Beach that will kick off in early March. These are part of a much larger effort to enhance the city’s infrastructure and pedestrian safety, and they’ll last for about 90 days, depending on the weather. This means that as the marathon approaches, you might notice some detours and blockages around town.

The closures will include upgrades to streets, sidewalks, and utilities. Imagine walking around a friendlier, more appealing downtown Myrtle Beach soon! Although these changes may cause some temporary inconvenience, the ultimate goal is to create better public spaces and improve traffic flow.

Marathon Route Details

As for the marathon, the race routes will certainly be affected by these closures. Runners will take on a journey from The Market Common to Grande Dunes Boulevard and all the way along Ocean Boulevard to Robert M. Grissom Parkway. On race day, more than 3,000 barricades will be set up by the Myrtle Beach Parks Division to ensure that the runners have a clear path ahead.

Heads up, early birds! The road leading to Robert M. Grissom Parkway, from 29th Avenue to Mr. Joe White Avenue, will close at 4 a.m. on race day. This means you’ll want to plan ahead if you have somewhere to be!

Race Schedule

The races will kick off bright and early, with the marathon and half marathon starting around 6:30 a.m. and the 5K event following at 7:30 a.m.. Spectators should mark their calendars to catch the announcements: 5K winners will be revealed at 8:30 a.m., while half marathon victors will be announced at 9 a.m.. Just so you know, the course for the half marathon will close by 10 a.m., and roads will reopen shortly after.

As for the full marathon, expect movement to wrap up by 1:15 p.m., with winners getting their moment in the spotlight at 10 a.m.. This marathon is also significant, as it’s a qualifier for the Boston Marathon, which is set for April 21.

Traffic Tips for the Day

To avoid any hiccups on the roads that day, drivers are advised to take alternate routes or leave extra time for their travels. While the roads may be a little hectic during this event, you can take some solace in knowing that the Highway 17 Bypass will stay open throughout the marathon.

Parking and Spectator Information

For those planning to cheer on their favorite participants, particularly spectators, an ideal parking location is on the west side of Ocean Boulevard. Make sure to arrive on the evening of February 28 to snag a good spot!

The Myrtle Beach Marathon has been a beloved local tradition since 1998, also featuring a half marathon, a 5K, a family fun run, and even a virtual 10K. Whether you’re running or cheering from the sidelines, there’s a lot to look forward to!

Stay tuned for updates, and let’s make this marathon event a fantastic day in our wonderful Myrtle Beach!
