News Summary

This weekend, college baseball dazzled fans with record-breaking pitching performances. East Carolina’s Ethan Norby shone with 19 strikeouts, while Oregon’s dominating series sweep and perfect games highlighted an action-packed weekend. As the season heats up, spectators are eager to see if these records will stand.

Record-Breaking Pitching Performances Highlight College Baseball Weekend

This weekend featured some absolutely jaw-dropping pitching displays that sent fans buzzing across the college baseball landscape. The 2025 season has been a thrilling one, with several NCAA Division I records falling as pitchers showcased their skills in grand style.

Dominance from Eastern Carolina

First up, we have the incredible performance by East Carolina’s sophomore left-hander, Ethan Norby. He stole the show by striking out a remarkable 19 batters in a stunning 7-0 victory against the ranked Coastal Carolina squad. This isn’t just any achievement; Norby’s 19 strikeouts set a new record for the American Athletic Conference and marked the most for an ECU pitcher since 1970.

To make things even more exciting, Norby kicked off the game by faning nine consecutive hitters. By the time the sixth inning rolled around, he was sitting on 16 strikeouts. Over 7.1 innings of work, he allowed just three hits and didn’t walk a single batter. This impressive outing also earned him his first win of the season. To celebrate this amazing accomplishment, his older brother, Connor Norby, who is currently playing for the Miami Marlins, took to social media to express his pride.

Aiming for Records

While Norby’s feat was nothing short of sensational, the NCAA Division I record for most strikeouts in a single game is still held by Buddy Schultz from Miami (OH), who racked up a staggering 26 strikeouts back in 1971. Who knows? Perhaps Norby could set his sights on breaking that record someday.

Perfect Game and No-Hitters

Turning the spotlight to Portland, we had another amazing moment in collegiate baseball history when Ryan Rembisz pitched a perfect game on February 25, marking the first of its kind in over two years. Not far behind Rembisz, Charlotte junior right-hander Blake Gillespie threw a no-hitter in a 5-0 win against James Madison, becoming only the second pitcher in program history to achieve this feat. Gillespie struck out 11 batters while allowing just one walk, with 79 of his 113 pitches landing for strikes.

That’s not all—No. 2 Tennessee levelled up their game as well, combining efforts to toss a no-hitter against St. Bonaventure while winning 12-0. This impressive showing marked Tennessee’s first no-hitter since 2002 and the ninth in their entire program history. Their pitching staff has been on fire, allowing three runs or less in 11 of their first 14 contests.

Junior left-hander Liam Doyle particularly stood out by striking out 13 batters and boasting an impressive 0.35 ERA following the game against St. Bonaventure.

The Oregon Ducks Show Their Strength

Meanwhile, over on the West Coast, the Oregon Ducks made headlines by achieving their first series sweep of the season against Columbia with an impressive 10-2 overall record. This series kicked off with a major bang as Oregon defeated Columbia by a whopping 20-11 margin, featuring Dominic Hellman hitting not one, but two grand slams!

The Ducks continued their domination in a Saturday doubleheader, where they set a program record for runs scored in a game with an astounding 35-1 victory. Ryan Cooney was a star in that game, going 4-for-4 with five runs and six RBIs. They followed it up with an 8-3 win in the second game, backed by Collin Clarke who pitched six scoreless innings.

Finally, Sunday wrapped up the series with another solid showing from Oregon, winning 7-0 behind a stellar outing from freshman pitcher Will Sanford, who allowed only one hit while striking out seven. What a way to finish the weekend!

As the Ducks gear up for a midweek matchup against Utah Tech and prepare for a three-game series against USC, there’s no doubt that college baseball is heating up! Keep your eyes peeled—this season is turning out to be one for the history books!
