Myrtle Beach’s Carolina Rhythm Tap Ensemble Inspires Adults to Rekindle Their Passion for Dance

If you find yourself strolling through Myrtle Beach and hear the delightful sounds of tapping feet, you’re likely in the vicinity of some adults rediscovering their passion for dance. Thanks to Michele Selvanto-Kowalski, this community has a vibrant avenue to explore their old loves or take a leap into something new. With more than 45 years of experience in tap teaching, Michele started a wonderful journey in Myrtle Beach back in 2014, when she set up shop at Coastal Dance Centre.

At the Coastal Dance Centre, Michele teaches tap classes for students of all ages, but her heart truly beats for adult learners. In May 2021, she took a significant step by launching the Carolina Rhythm Tap Ensemble, an adult-only group designed for those who may have set aside their dance dreams for more pressing commitments like careers and family. This endeavor shines a light on the importance of pursuing passions, no matter one’s age.

Take students like Trisha Hileman and Susan Krajewski, for instance. Both ladies danced in their younger years, but life took them in different directions. It was not until they discovered tap classes at Coastal Dance Centre that they felt that familiar spark of excitement wash over them again. Trisha, feeling inspired after going through some life changes, jumped at the opportunity to rediscover her rhythm. Likewise, Susan couldn’t contain her excitement after spotting the advertisement for dance classes. Both women took the plunge, and the results have been nothing short of enchanting.

Every week, the ensemble meets to practice choreography and enhance their skills. This dedication prepares them for performances that not only display their hard work but bring joy to others. The delight on the faces of audience members, like residents of nursing homes, has made the experience truly rewarding. For these dancers, showcasing their talent is more than just a performance; it’s about connecting with the community.

One of the reasons why this ensemble stands out is its sense of community and camaraderie. As the dancers bond over their shared passion, they forge friendships that feel like family. The atmosphere in the classes is always fun and stress-free, creating a welcoming space where laughter fills the air. The ensemble perfectly balances learning techniques while ensuring that each tap dance tells a unique story.

Inclusivity is a core value of the Carolina Rhythm Tap Ensemble, welcoming both men and women to join in the fun and creativity. They are gearing up for their summer performance, the Americana Show, which holds a special purpose: honoring veterans and active military members. This thoughtful tribute blends their love for dance with appreciation for those who serve the country.

The Coastal Dance Centre doesn’t just stop at tap; it offers a variety of classes for both children and adults, including ballet, jazz, and hip-hop. Owner Liza Mata believes in the transformative power of dance and encourages everyone to seek out the joy of movement, which is fulfilling and enhances self-expression.

In addition to the Carolina Rhythm Tap Ensemble, the Coastal Dance Centre will host auditions for the upcoming production of The Nutcracker on Saturday. It’s an exciting time for those interested in bringing their skills to the stage, whether they’re seasoned pros or just beginning their dance journey.

The Carolina Rhythm Tap Ensemble and Coastal Dance Centre are all about inspiring a love for dance, allowing adults to relive their glory days or conquer their fears. In Myrtle Beach, the rhythm of tap dancing continues to bring people together, reminding us all that it’s never too late to follow our passions.
