Community Mourns the Loss of Jerry Sanders, Esteemed Historian and Park Ranger

Santa Claus, Indiana, is in mourning as the community remembers the life and legacy of Gerald W. Sanders, affectionately known as Jerry, who passed away on July 10, 2025, at the age of 77. Jerry spent his final days at Willowdale Village in Dale, where he received incredible support and care.

A Local Icon

Born on April 1, 1948, in Tell City, Jerry was a true son of Indiana. His early years were spent in the small town of Lincoln City, where his passion for history and storytelling began to flourish. After graduating from Dale High School in 1966, he furthered his education at Brescia University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree that equipped him for a lifetime dedicated to the celebration of American heritage.

A Love Story

In 1992, Jerry married his sweetheart, Mildred (Micky) Smith, in a lovely ceremony at St. Joseph Church in Dale. Together, they built a warm and family-oriented life. Jerry is survived by Micky, his son Dwayne (Michelle) of Petersburg, and stepdaughter Angie (Bret) Underhill of Adyeville. He was a proud grandfather to four grandchildren: Clayton, Delaney, Brandon, and Lauren.

Retirement and Remarkable Achievements

Jerry dedicated a significant part of his life to the National Park Service, representing it for 25 years and concluding his career as Supervisory Park Ranger and Historian at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial. His work was instrumental in shaping how history is shared, making him a well-respected figure in national parks and communities alike.

Not only was he a skilled park ranger, but Jerry also authored two books centered on the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln. He collaborated with Holiday World’s Patricia Koch on various projects focused on the town of Santa Claus and played an essential role in gathering artifacts for the Santa Claus Museum. His knowledge and dedication made him a popular consultant for three history books about the town.

Community Engagement

Jerry was no stranger to the spotlight. His expertise often found him featured in local news, where he shared fascinating insights about Lincoln and the area’s history. He had his own radio program, ‘Along the Lincoln Trail with Jerry Sanders’, where he brought history to life for listeners. He partnered with Huntingburg Mayor Dale Helmerich to air Lincoln-themed programming, further solidifying his role as a community historian.

More than a Ranger

Jerry’s love for Lincoln extended to the screen as well, making appearances in a television network show alongside notable names like Will Koch and Steven Corbett. His passion for history was matched only by his enthusiasm for outdoor activities, where he served as a lifeguard in his youth and relished golfing with friends in his golden years as part of the “Wednesday Morning Golf Bunch.” His memories of cruising to Myrtle Beach and enjoying adventures in Kentucky and Tennessee with friends will be cherished forever.

A Man of Many Interests

Beyond his work and family, Jerry had a variety of hobbies. He enjoyed gardening—particularly growing gourds—fishing, and immersing himself in Lincoln trivia. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he also shared a proud bond with the Dale American Legion Post 444, further reflecting his commitment to service. His interests extended to stock car racing and collecting matchbooks, showcasing his vibrant and multifaceted personality.

Final Arrangements

In honoring Jerry’s wishes, the family has requested no services. They express heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Willowdale Village and Gentiva Hospice for their exceptional care during Jerry’s final days. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of choice, fostering a legacy of compassion that Jerry embodied throughout his life.

Jerry Sanders will undoubtedly be missed by his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege to know him. His contributions to history, love for community, and dedication to education will continue to resonate in the hearts of many.
