News Summary

Fripp Island offers a unique getaway combining stunning landscapes, adventurous activities, and a poignant historical narrative. A couple celebrated their anniversary with golf, kayaking, and a newfound awareness of the island’s past. Upcoming events like a college golf tournament add to its allure, making it a memorable destination for all.

Fripp Island: A Memorable Getaway with a Touch of History

Located in South Carolina, Fripp Island is a delightful destination that beautifully combines nature’s serenity with a surprising historical depth. Recently, a couple decided to celebrate their 27th wedding anniversary on this charming island, and they had quite the experience to share!

A Beautiful Escape

Fripp Island is nothing short of breathtaking. With its lush greenery and gorgeous landscapes, visitors can’t help but be captivated by the island’s peaceful vibe. The couple stayed in an inviting loft that boasted a stunning marsh right in the backyard, making it a tranquil retreat just a short stroll away from the sparkling ocean.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, they were treated to a night sky filled with twinkling stars. The darkness of the night revealed distant lightning storms, adding a touch of drama to the beautiful backdrop.

Adventure Awaits

The couple took full advantage of the local offerings. They hopped on a thrilling 90-minute cruise and a two-hour kayak tour. During their kayaking adventure, they were delighted to share the water with a playful family of dolphins, darting alongside them as if to join in on the celebration of love and nature. Spotting a massive bald eagle nest during the kayak expedition was just the cherry on top of an already wonderful day.

In addition to the awe-inspiring wildlife, the couple learned that the area served as a filming location for memorable scenes from both the iconic movie “Forrest Gump” and the Netflix sensation “Outer Banks.” It was a wonderful way to connect the beauty of the locale with pop culture.

Golf Carts and the Unspoken Truths

Myrtle Beach for 30 years, this couple experienced the joy of cruising around Fripp Island on a golf cart for the first time. With a top speed of 15 mph, it was a fun way to soak in the sights. Interestingly, they chose to forgo the island’s golf course during their stay, focusing instead on enjoying all the other activities the island offered.

However, their delightful getaway took a more complicated turn when they discovered that the Fripp family had been one of the largest enslavers in South Carolina’s history. Owning nearly 1,000 Black individuals, this dark chapter wasn’t highlighted in the brochures or mentioned by their guides, which left the couple feeling a mix of emotions. As they reflected on this history, they couldn’t help but notice that they were among just a small number of Black visitors on the island.

This revelation didn’t necessarily anger them, but instead, it urged them to ground themselves in the complexity of their nation’s racial history. They personally felt a connection to the history of slavery, as individual ancestors of theirs were enslaved, which made the need to acknowledge that history all the more poignant. During a visit to historical sites in Williamsburg, the importance of honoring the past was driven home even further.

A Bright Future Ahead

Division II college golf tournament set for 2025 called the “Fripp Island to Bermuda Invite.” Taking place at the Ocean Point Golf Course, the medalist of this tournament will even earn an exemption to compete in the prestigious PGA Tour’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

The island is also evolving as the Fripp Island Golf and Beach Resort recently acquired Camelot Farms Equestrian Center for community and tourist activities. Spanning 62 acres and housing 54 horses, it adds yet another layer of recreational opportunity to this vacationer’s paradise.

Fripp Island: An Experience for Everyone

With its fruitful blend of adventure, history, and stunning landscapes, Fripp Island continues to appeal to families and vacationers alike. Plenty of recreational activities await, from golfing and swimming to fishing and kayaking. Wildlife lovers will be thrilled by the abundance of natural beauty, making it a truly family-friendly escape.

As visitors explore the island’s charming offerings, they are reminded not to shy away from its moments of complexity. Fripp Island is a place where treasured memories are made, and where history adds depth to the beauty that surrounds it.
