Poland, Ohio, Remembers Beloved Local Figure John David Vallinger
In a heartwarming farewell, the community of Poland, Ohio, gathers to remember John David Vallinger, who passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025, following complications from a stroke. At just 61 years old, John was a shining light in the lives of many, known for his infectious smile and warm-hearted nature.
A Life Well-Lived
Born on March 27, 1964, in Youngstown, Ohio, John was raised by his parents, Raymond and Connie (DelSignore) Vallinger. A proud graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School’s class of 1982, he quickly marked himself as a notable figure in his community from a young age.
John’s love story began in high school when he met Melanie, the love of his life. The two tied the knot in 1987 and spent nearly four decades together, packed with moments of laughter, adventure, and family fun. The bond they shared was evident to all who knew them, serving as a testament to their deep love and friendship.
A Career with Heart
Starting his career in sales at Scandinavian Health Spas in 1982, John climbed the ranks and later took on district management roles at Circuit City and Big Lots, where he dedicated 16 years of his life. Colleagues remembered him not just as a coworker but as a friend, always ready with a smile and a kind word.
His passion extended beyond the workplace; he had a profound love for coaching youth football. As a longtime trustee and head coach for the Poland Little Bulldogs, he proudly led the 130-lb team to a Super Bowl win in 2003. John was the ultimate sports enthusiast, cheering his sons, Tyler and Trent, on in their football, baseball, and wrestling events.
Living Life to the Fullest
John enjoyed an array of hobbies that brought him happiness and excitement. He found joy in activities such as scratching off lottery tickets, visiting the casino, fishing, and maintaining a daily workout regimen. His love for travel was evident in annual trips to Nevada and Mexico with Melanie, as well as golfing in Myrtle Beach. Each year, trips to Keeneland with friends became cherished traditions that furthered his adventurous spirit.
Family and Community
John’s family was his pride and joy. He is survived by his beloved wife, Melanie, and their sons, Tyler (who is married to Ericka) and Trent (who is married to Dee). He also leaves behind a loving sister, Rose Miller; a brother, Frank (and Gloria) Vallinger; and several cherished sisters-in-law, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Uncle John, affectionately called “Fun Uncle John”, will surely be missed by many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Sadly, John was preceded in death by his parents and brother Ray, as well as his in-laws, Elmer and Dorothy Haidle. The family has expressed heartfelt gratitude for the compassionate care provided by the healthcare professionals at St. Elizabeth Youngstown CVICU during John’s illness.
