Myrtle Beach, September 3, 2025
News Summary
Whispering Pines Golf Club in Myrtle Beach has reopened its doors to golfers after a $1.5 million renovation. The extensive upgrades include new grass types, remodeled bunkers, and enhanced irrigation systems, improving the overall golfing experience. With an influx of players since reopening, the course is positioned to become a sought-after destination for golf enthusiasts. The renovations extend beyond the course, enhancing the clubhouse and creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors. Additionally, other local courses are also slated for renovations, promising an exciting future for Myrtle Beach’s golf scene.
Myrtle Beach Golf Community Welcomes Back Whispering Pines
The sun is shining a bit brighter over Whispering Pines Golf Club in Myrtle Beach as it reopens its doors to golfers on September 1 after a spectacular renovation that’s sure to excite enthusiasts in the area. With an investment of approximately $1.5 million, the club undertook an extensive overhaul that included a three-phase plan kicking off last winter, ultimately transforming the course into a true gem for golfers.
A Fresh Look and Feel
The list of upgrades at Whispering Pines is nothing short of impressive. For starters, the greens now feature Sunday ultradwarf Bermudagrass, while the tees and fairways have been outfitted with Bimini Bermuda. This premium grass is known for its toughness and ability to withstand drought, allowing for a more resilient playing surface. Not only that, but some of the shaded tees have been regrassed with zoysia grass, which thrives with less sunlight.
One of the first things players will notice is the smoothness of the fairways, thanks to leveling and smoothing performed with a bulldozer before the renovation. The layout of the course stretches to nearly 6,800 yards with a challenging par-72, featuring contributions from the acclaimed design team of Finger, Dye, and Spann.
Bunkers That Rival the Best
Golfers love a good challenge, and the newly renovated bunkers at Whispering Pines are designed to deliver just that. Fresh sand that mirrors the quality found at Augusta National Golf Club has been added, ensuring that players will face a premium test every time they find themselves in the sand. Besides the course modifications, the clubhouse has received a facelift too, complete with new carpeting, fresh interior paint, and inviting outdoor patio furniture, enhancing the social experience for visitors.
Smart Upgrades and Great Traffic
The renovation project didn’t stop at aesthetics. The pumphouse has been rebuilt, and the irrigation technology has seen upgrades that will keep the course green and well-maintained. Since opening back up, Whispering Pines has seen a great influx of players, averaging a couple of hundred rounds a day.
Last fiscal year alone, the course hosted 56,000 rounds of golf, and that was despite being closed for renovations for a full month! The club has implemented a small increase in local rates, now at $45, with some outside rates rising by $5 to $10 based on the season. It’s a small price to pay for a fresh and vibrant golfing experience.
Welcoming Atmosphere
Other Courses Join the Renovation Trend
But it’s not just Whispering Pines making waves in the golf community. Other local courses are also getting in on the action. The Maples Course at Sea Trail Golf Resort is expected to reopen by October 1, boasting expanded fairways and the removal of all cart paths for a more natural feel. Similarly, at the Myrtle Beach National Golf Club, the popular King’s North Course is set to reopen on October 7 after a comprehensive renovation and partial rebuild that took place over two summers.
Golf enthusiasts will also be pleased to hear that the MacKay nine at Thistle Golf Club is scheduled to reopen on September 25, and Prestwick Country Club completed smaller but effective renovations, including drainage improvements and bunker removals.
