Whispering Pines Golf Club Reopens After $1.44 Million Renovation

Myrtle Beach is buzzing with excitement as the Whispering Pines Golf Club made its grand return on September 1, 2025, following an extensive renovation that cost a whopping $1.44 million. The city-owned course is now ready to take on both seasoned golfers and newcomers looking for a fantastic day out on the greens.

Major Upgrades Turn Course Into a Golfer’s Paradise

The renovation project included a slew of impressive upgrades that promise to enhance everyone’s golfing experience. One of the most notable changes is the installation of brand-new tee boxes and lush greens. The old fairways have been replaced with resilient Bimini Bermuda grass, which is known for being both drought-tolerant and highly durable. This means you can expect better playing conditions, even during those hot summer days!

If you’re a fan of smooth putting, you’ll appreciate the switch to Sunday ultradwarf Bermudagrass on the putting greens. Plus, renovations to the bunkers now include fresh sand and upgraded drainage systems, ensuring they look pristine and function well under various weather conditions.

State-of-the-Art Irrigation and Parking Improvements

One of the big highlights is the replacement of the entire irrigation system, which now boasts improved technology and new irrigation heads designed to optimize water usage. This advancement is sure to keep the course looking vibrant and green year-round. Additionally, there’s been a complete repaving of the parking lot for added convenience, making it easier for golfers to access the club.

As if that weren’t enough, a new pump for the pumphouse building was installed to facilitate the irrigation process, ensuring that the course is always well-hydrated. For those tee-off spots under the trees, some tees have been regrassed with zoysia grass suitable for shaded areas, promoting healthier growth despite limited sunlight.

Clubhouse Updates and Outdoor Comfort

The clubhouse has also received a makeover, featuring brand-new carpeting and a fresh coat of interior paint that gives it a vibrant and welcoming vibe. Outside, golfers can enjoy enhanced patio furniture, perfect for relaxing between rounds or enjoying a cool drink after a day on the course.

A Course with History

Whispering Pines Golf Club spans nearly 6,800 yards and features a challenging 72 par. Originally opened in 1962, the course underwent significant design work by the Texas firm Finger, Dye and Spann back in 1986, making it a beloved local destination for golfers of all skill levels.

Exciting Times Ahead

The city council blessed the renovation project during an October 2024 meeting, paving the way for this transformative endeavor. Whispering Pines has been under the management of Atlantic Golf Management since 2014, and thanks to their efforts, the course has seen wonderful financial improvement over the years.

Despite the typically slower summer months for golfing—thanks to those high temperatures—the renovations were timed perfectly with the growing needs of Bermuda grass. Interestingly, the course benefitted from over 20 inches of rainfall during the summer, giving the new grass a lovely boost in growth.

All Set to Tee Off

Since reopening, Whispering Pines Golf Club has been rocking an average of a few hundred players each day. While local rates for play have increased slightly by $3, bringing the total to $45, the overall experience and enhancements make it well worth it!

And for those arriving via the Myrtle Beach International Airport, a shiny new entrance sign welcoming everyone to the “Golf Capital of the World” will soon greet golfers, adding to the excitement as they gear up for a round at this revamped treasure.
