After his military service, John found fulfillment in a long career, retiring in 1995 after 44 years with Cooper Energy Services.

His passion for sports spanned basketball, bowling, and slow-pitch softball, where he once pitched a remarkable no-hitter while playing for the Cooper Bessemer Turbos at Riverside Park. Later in life, he enjoyed invigorating rounds of golf, particularly during numerous summers spent at Hiawatha Golf Course and winters in sunny Myrtle Beach, often alongside his beloved wife, Mona.

He leaves behind his cherished wife, Mona (Coon) Wolford, along with their children: John Tim (Lou Ann) Wolford of Fredericktown, Cynthia (James) Morgan of Mansfield, and Joseph (Pam) Henthorn of Scottsville, Virginia. John also proudly embraced his role as a grandfather to three granddaughters: Jennifer (Josh) Howe, Brittany (Aron) Boyce, and Emily Bevacqua, as well as four great-grandchildren: Alden Delacruz, Gavin Daugherty, Payton Daugherty, and Olivia Harrop.
Farewell Arrangements
John R. Wolford’s legacy will be honored in a funeral service scheduled for October 2, 2025, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Lasater Chapel in Mount Vernon, starting at 11 a.m.. Friends and family are welcome to pay their respects from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Pastor Lucian Baker will officiate the service, which will conclude with burial at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
