CCU Student-Athletes Promote Childhood Literacy for Next Generation
Myrtle Beach, S.C. – February 27, 2024
Dozens of Coastal Carolina University student-athletes read to kindergartners on Tuesday morning at seventeen Horry County elementary schools. It was for United Way’s 21st annual Caring for Kindergartners event. This event aims to influence students positively and demonstrate the importance of early childhood literacy and volunteerism among children.
Connecting with the Younger Generation
Serena Lin, Coastal Carolina Dance Team member, said it helps student-athletes connect with the younger generation. “I just think it’s awesome, and I think everyone should have the opportunity to do it, and if you do get the opportunity to do it, definitely do it. It’s so rewarding,” Lin said.
Partnership Between United Way and Coastal Carolina
United Way President and CEO Blakely Roof said she is thankful for the partnership between United Way and Coastal Carolina. She appreciates the time students take from their schedules to help with this event. “One of our main initiatives is kindergarten readiness, and a lot of that has to do with reading, so we want kids to know that reading is fun,” Roof explained.
Special Guest Appearance
On top of the student-athletes, St. James Elementary School students got a special guest: Chauncey, Coastal Carolina’s mascot. The United Way plans to continue this annual event for many years to come.
