Victim’s Aunt Shares Powerful Message At Democratic National Convention
During the final night of the Democratic National Convention held in Chicago, Melody McFadden, an aunt to a woman killed in a still unsolved shooting in Myrtle Beach 10 years ago, took to the stage sharing her poignant story and her continuous fight for justice.
A Decade Old Tragedy
In a riveting, heartfelt address, McFadden recounted the tragic events surrounding the untimely death of her niece, 22-year-old Sandy Barnwell, during the Memorial Day Weekend of 2014. “She drove to Myrtle Beach for sun and fun and motorcycle parades,” McFadden shared with the assembly.
Barnwell, along with her cousins, traveled from Summerville to partake in the Bikefest of that year – an event marked by five distinct episodes of violence, including the fatal shooting that claimed Barnwell’s life.
Unanswered Questions Linger
Hours after a disheartening phone call reporting Barnwell missing, McFadden found herself scanning the area, contacting police, hospitals and relatives with a calm demeanor betraying a heart filled with apprehension. Her worst fears were confirmed when she was finally directed to the Horry County Coroner’s Office and informed about Barnwell’s tragic fate.
Myrtle Beach police noted a fight erupting in front of the Bermuda Sands Motel ultimately escalated into a shooting. As the chaos ensued, Barnwell and others attempted to flee the scene, at which point deadly bullets began to rain down. An emotional McFadden expressed her belief on the tragic event, maintaining that Barnwell was merely a victim of being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
An undying Pursuit For Justice
With the murder of Sandy Barnwell remaining unsolved after a long decade, McFadden has vowed to pursue justice relentlessly. Her statement on the DNC stage, “I’ll keep calling, and I’ll keep fighting,” bears testimony to her unyielding spirit and determination.
