Exciting News for Myrtle Beach: Free Concealed Weapons Permit Courses!

Hey Myrtle Beach! We’ve got some news that might just tickle your fancy, especially if you’re looking to enhance your knowledge on firearm safety. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has announced that they’re rolling out free concealed weapons permit (CWP) courses throughout our lovely state, and yes, that includes right here in Horry County!

What’s the Scoop?

This initiative is part of the new Constitutional Carry law in South Carolina, which means SLED is required to offer two free CWP classes every month in each county. So, whether you’re a seasoned pro or just want to know the ropes, these classes are a fantastic opportunity to get some official training without shelling out a dime!

No Changes to Current Classes

Before you get too excited, let’s clarify: this new program doesn’t replace existing CWP classes. It’s an addition to what’s already out there, and it’s specifically free for the instructional part of the course. You might still see other CWP classes on the schedule, but this gives you more options to explore!

What You Need to Know Before You Sign Up

Thinking about joining a class? There are a few requirements to keep in mind:

  • You must have a South Carolina driver’s license or own real property in South Carolina.
  • Don’t forget to bring your own handgun and 25 rounds of ammo for the shooting part of the class. If you don’t own a handgun, no worries! You can arrange to rent one ahead of time.
  • You can sign up for classes in any county, so you’re not limited to just Horry County!
  • You must be at least 18 years old to attend.

How to Sign Up

If you’re ready to get started, signing up is super easy!

  1. Head over to SLED’s website.
  2. Select the county you want to take the course in and click the “Find Class Date” button.
  3. Submit your request for a class by picking a date from the schedule.
  4. Just one week before your class, you’ll receive an email with all the class details and info about your instructor—easy peasy!

What’s Included in the Course?

Wondering what you’ll learn? Students can expect at least four hours of instruction covering the basics of firearm safety, fundamentals, firearm terms (they can be a mouthful!), the law of self-defense, and much more. There’s even a 50-question multiple-choice test at the end, plus a 25-round qualification course. You’ll need to score at least 70% to pass—no pressure, right?

Why Attend?

These classes are a fabulous chance for anyone from a curious newbie wanting to learn more to experienced folks who just want to refresh their skills and knowledge. Plus, it’s all about staying safe and understanding the laws surrounding carrying a firearm. Having more knowledge is never a bad thing!

In Closing

So, there you have it, Myrtle Beach! If you’re interested in the free CWP courses, be sure to catch one that fits your schedule. It’s a great way to get informed and involved, all while making our beautiful community a little safer. Happy learning!
