A Life of Service and Adventure
Kerm was born on November 4, 1939, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, and was the fifth of seven cherished children in the Hermann family. His father, Erich Hermann, was a German immigrant, while his mother, Emma Larsen, was the daughter of a Lutheran preacher. When Kerm was young, the family relocated to Charles City, Iowa, where he would begin to carve out his unique path in life.
As a young man, Kerm had a job delivering newspapers for the Des Moines Register, which not only instilled a strong work ethic in him but also earned him a scholarship to attend the renowned Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. He graduated in 1958 and went on to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, completing his studies in 1962. His passion for service led him to the U.S. Navy, where he had an adventurous career that spanned various assignments, including travels to Asia and Africa. Kerm worked on Navy research projects throughout his career and eventually retired in 1982 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander, a testament to his dedication and effectiveness.
Embracing a New Chapter
After retiring from the Navy, Kermyn embarked on a new journey in the private sector, working for organizations that handled U.S. defense contracts, proving once again his commitment to his country. In 2018, Kermyn made the decision to move to Amery, where he enjoyed a small-town lifestyle with his brother Forrest and sister-in-law Kay. The serene lake life suited him perfectly, and he quickly became a fixture in the community.
Golfing and Family Time
Kerm’s hobbies were many, but golfing stood out as a favorite pastime. He took pride in being part of the “Fogey Golf” group, where he shared good times with friends and family. Notably, he served as the official scorekeeper and navigator for the fun-filled “Frost Bite Open” golf outing. Kermyn loved to travel, and Myrtle Beach became one of his cherished destinations. He also relished adventures at Lake Superior and was known for his “Sunday Scramble” outings with his nephew, Cory.
