Fall Fun Kicks Off in Myrtle Beach with Baby’s First Pumpkin Weekend!

As we dive into fall, Myrtle Beach locals have something special to look forward to. Thompson Farm, located just a hop away in Conway, is all set for an adorable event called “Baby’s First Pumpkin Weekend”. This festive gathering is perfect for babies aged 12 months and younger, giving them the chance to truly soak up the essence of fall for the very first time!

What’s Happening This Weekend

Parents, this is your moment! Imagine your little ones surrounded by a variety of brightly colored pumpkins, each one waiting to be selected. And here’s the cherry on top: mini baby pumpkins will be handed out for free! It’s bound to create some super cute photo opportunities that you’ll cherish for years to come.

But before you get too excited, there’s a bit of a storyline behind where these pumpkins come from. Christina Burzler, the Managing Partner at Thompson Farm, revealed that unlike some regions, our sandy coastal soil isn’t suitable for growing pumpkins. “The larger pumpkins with all their water content tend to rot quickly in our warm sun,” Burzler explained. With September temperatures hanging out in the mid-to-upper 80s, it’s just not pumpkin-friendly here.

Where Do the Pumpkins Come From?

So, where are they getting all these **fresh** pumpkins? Burzler has to partner with various farms from around South Carolina, as well as farms in Virginia and Pennsylvania where the growing conditions are just right. “We go weekly to pick them up to keep them as fresh as possible. The heat doesn’t really calm down until about mid-October, so it’s crucial we keep our stock fresh,” she added.

The Challenges of Pumpkin Farming

It’s not all smooth sailing, though. The coastal heat can be a pumpkin farmer’s worst enemy! Too much sun exposure can lead to rapid rotting. One massive farm they partnered with even lost their entire crop due to excess water from Hurricane Debby. “You really have to seek out locations that aren’t plagued by this blistering heat,” Burzler remarked.

But don’t worry, they’ve found a way to make use of pumpkins that do spoil. “Any pumpkins that rot can even be used for buffalo feed,” Burzler noted. It’s nice to know nothing goes to waste!

A Joyful Experience for Families

The heartwarming part of this event? Just knowing that families will flock to the farm seeking fun and smiles. Burzler expressed her joy, stating, “It’s honestly so rewarding to see the kids and families come here each year!” Connecting with farm owners from around the country to learn what’s working best for them helps ensure that Thompson Farm brings the best experiences to our area.

Season Pass for Unlimited Fun

Exciting news for families! This year, Thompson Farm is introducing a $30 season pass. This pass grants access to several themed weekends, including Grandparents Weekend, Touch a Tractor Weekend, and a delightful new Princess and Super Heroes weekend featuring appearances by beloved characters. Your kids are going to love it!

Mark Your Calendars, Myrtle Beach!

So, get ready, Myrtle Beach! The festivities at Thompson Farm are just around the corner, promising a fantastic fall experience. It’s time to enjoy the cooler weather, the cute pumpkins, and create some magical memories with your little ones!
