Binghamton Community Mourns the Loss of John Charles Mackin, Sr. at Age 82

In the heart of Binghamton, a wave of sadness has washed over the community following the unexpected passing of John Charles Mackin, Sr. on September 23, 2025. He left us at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy of love, generosity, and community spirit that will not be forgotten.

A Life Well-Lived on the Eastside

John Mackin was a true Binghamtonian, having spent his entire life on the Eastside of the city. He was a proud graduate of St. Paul’s Catholic School, a place where he developed his strong faith and dedicated community spirit. Throughout his life, John remained an integral part of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, where he fondly served as both an altar boy and usher, embodying the values of service and compassion.

A Family Man with a Generous Heart

Family was everything to John. He is survived by his three devoted sons, John Jr., James, and Jarrod, as well as his beloved grandchildren: Landon, Joleana, and Katelyn, who were truly the loves of his life. John’s generous spirit extended beyond his immediate family; he also leaves behind his brother Joseph, sisters Margaret Kucera, Madelyn Noleen, Georgeanna Combs, and sister-in-law Anna Mackin, along with a special bond with cousins George and Beverly Hoch, all of whom will remember him fondly.

A Proud Navy Veteran and Community Leader

John’s dedication went beyond family. He proudly served in the United States Navy for three years, an experience that shaped his life in many ways. After his service, John worked tirelessly as an EMT for Superior Ambulance, helping countless individuals in their moments of need. His commitment to the community didn’t stop there; he also took on roles as a coach for the Eastside youth association and worked as a basketball referee, influencing and shaping the lives of many young athletes.

Passionate about Helping Others

His career took him to the Binghamton Psychiatric Center, where he worked as a case worker, helping outpatients reintegrate into society. John was also active in the PEF union and served on the grievance committee, always advocating for fairness and better working conditions for his peers. His dedication to service was evident in both his professional and personal lives.

Memories of Adventure

Traveling brought joy to John’s life, as he enjoyed several cruises with his wife and cousins, exploring beautiful destinations including Ireland. He also cherished trips to Las Vegas and Myrtle Beach, where he created unforgettable memories. An avid golfer, he participated in two leagues every year and was frequently seen at Tioga Downs casino, enjoying his time at the tables.

A Legacy of Kindness

John was known throughout Binghamton for his unwavering generosity and his willingness to lend a helping hand to those in need. His kindness and spirit touched many lives, making a profound impact on everyone who knew him.
