Clifford “Cliff” Jones Appointed Next Superintendent of Horry County Schools

Conway, S.C. — The Horry County Schools (HCS) board has announced the appointment of Clifford “Cliff” Jones as the new superintendent during a special meeting held Thursday. Jones is set to take on the role with a three-year contract, beginning either on or shortly after February 3, 2025.

Who is Cliff Jones?

Cliff Jones brings over two decades of educational experience, with his entire 23-year career spent in Fulton County Schools, Georgia. He has held various positions, starting as a high school social studies teacher in 2001, and evolving into roles such as principal, area superintendent, and chief academic officer. His diverse background equips him with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and intricacies present in large school districts.

Why Was He Chosen?

According to HCS board chair David Cox, while all three final candidates had commendable qualifications, Jones’s extensive experience in a district serving approximately 70,000 students distinguished him from the others. Cox emphasized the importance of having someone who understands the complexities of a large educational system to lead Horry County Schools.

Jones’s Vision for Horry County

In a conversation with WMBF News prior to the meeting, Jones expressed confidence in his ability to advance Horry County Schools. He stated, “What I’ve seen is what I’ve been able to accomplish at a small level, at an elementary school but also as a district leader.” He is optimistic about developing structures and systems tailored to enhance the district further.

Transition Period

Jones will succeed Dr. Eddie Ingram, who has been serving as the interim superintendent following the retirement of Dr. Rick Maxey earlier this year. Ingram is expected to remain in his position for a brief period to ensure a smooth transition between leadership.

Jones’s Credentials

Jones’s educational credentials include three master’s degrees: a Master of Arts in Modern History from the University of St. Andrews, a Master of Education in Secondary Social Studies from Georgia State University, and a Master of Business Administration from Kennesaw State University. His academic background supports his leadership capabilities and strategic vision for the district.

Looking Ahead

During the meeting, Jones conveyed his eagerness to begin his role within Horry County Schools. “I’m ready to get to work and I’m humbled by the board’s decision to bring me to be part of the team,” he said. He expressed his commitment to collaborating with the community as they embark on this new journey together.

Conclusion

The appointment of Cliff Jones signals a new chapter for Horry County Schools, as the board is optimistic about his leadership and vision for the future. As preparations for his eventual start date continue, stakeholders within the district and the broader community await the changes and progress that may follow his leadership.
