Conway Celebrates 60 Years of Christmas Magic with Dazzling Light Display

Conway Lights Up with 60 Years of Christmas Cheer!

Conway, SC – As the holiday season approaches, the spirit of Christmas shines brightly on Sessions Street, thanks to the beloved Cummings family. For 60 enchanting years, Billy and Naomi Cummings have transformed their yard into a winter wonderland, delighting the community and creating cherished memories.

A Spark That Kindled a Tradition

The holiday magic began in 1964 when a simple strand of lights made its way to the Cummings home. “Billy asked his dad, ‘What you got there, Daddy?'” Naomi reminisced, her eyes twinkling with nostalgia. “And he said, ‘Some lights. Put them on the porch.’ So we did a little bit, and it just grew and grew,” she added with a smile.

What started as a modest display has blossomed into a breathtaking exhibition of lights and decorations, featuring everything from vintage Santas to hand-painted nativity scenes that Billy crafted alongside their daughter, Theresa Tyler. Each night, the lights twinkle brightly, drawing visitors from near and far.

Family Fun in Every Detail

Now at 86 and 89 years old, Billy and Naomi take joy in involving their children and grandchildren in this festive endeavor. Twinkling lights flood the yard with radiant color, while laughter echoes through the night as the family collaborates to bring the display to life. Cummings’ shed and upstairs rooms are filled to the brim with a glorious assortment of decorations collected over the decades.

Loyal Fans on Christmas Journeys

Cars line up along Sessions Street, with many visitors making a special trip just to witness the dazzling display. According to Billy, “We’ve had old people, older than we are, they’ll come by and say that’s the only Christmas they ever have, coming by seeing these lights.” It’s heartwarming to hear how their love for decorations has made a real difference in the lives of others.

A Family Affair

The festive spirit extends beyond the Cummings family’s home. At least five other family members live nearby, and they join in the heartwarming tradition of decorating every year. Billy’s brother Danny and his wife Janice, as well as Danny’s son, all contribute their creative flair to the holiday lights. “It’s all family all the way down to the ditch,” exclaimed Billy proudly.

Creating Lifetime Memories

Adding to the family lore, Danny recalls the small decorations his mother hung in their home long before the Christmas lights lit up the porch. Even now, his own children dress up in seasonal costumes to entertain the little ones who visit. It’s clear that this family doesn’t just decorate; they create memories that will last a lifetime.

Keeping the Spirit Alive

For Janice, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. “It brings us a lot of joy,” she said. “It’s fun. It’s a job, but it’s worth it. All the kids come by, and they get so excited.” The excitement is contagious as families gather around, enjoying the safe and magical atmosphere that the Cummings family has fostered.

The Christmas on Sessions Street Event

In past years, the North Conway Baptist Church hosted an event called Christmas on Sessions Street, where communities came together for live music, hot cocoa, and even nativity performances. Though the event has seen some rainy cancellations recently, enthusiasm for the light displays remains unwavering.

Rain or Shine, Christmas Shines Bright

Even with the weather forecast calling for thunderstorms in the morning followed by steady rain in the afternoon — set for 90% chance of rain — the Cummings family stays committed to their festive displays. Billy noted, “If we didn’t do it, it’d be a big loss.” With their collective creativity and dedication, there’s no doubt that the spirit of Christmas will endure on Sessions Street.

As the season progresses, the Cummings family will continue to spread holiday cheer, lighting up Conway one joyful decoration at a time. This year, as they flip the switch to turn on the lights, they will be not just illuminating their yard, but also the hearts of everyone who passes by.
