News Summary

The golf community mourns the passing of David Sibley, a beloved head PGA professional at Gannon Municipal Golf Course. His dedication to the game and the community will be remembered as he leaves a lasting legacy.

LYNN, MA – A Great Loss in the Golf Community

David Sibley, the head PGA professional at Gannon Municipal Golf Course, tragically passed away on Thursday, November 6, 2025. He was only 54 years old and had been bravely battling pancreatic cancer for the past four years after being diagnosed in 2021. David’s passing leaves a significant void in the hearts of many who knew and admired him.

A New Englander Through and Through

A native of Maine, Sibley’s roots were firmly planted in New England. He proudly identified as “a New Englander from the beginning,” which perfectly reflected his passion for the region and its golf culture. David’s journey in golf began at the tender age of 14 when he first picked up a club, and from there, he developed into a well-respected professional in the industry.

Building His Career

Before he became the head pro at Gannon, Sibley had a colorful career, having previously served at esteemed places like the Wild Wing Plantation in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina. His expertise extended to several other respected golf facilities, including The Cohasset Golf Club, The Harmon Club, Wentworth Hills, Ipswich Country Club, and Beverly Golf & Tennis Club. He received accolades not only for his management but also for his operations, merchandising, and event planning.

An Award-Winning Professional

In recognition of his substantial contributions to the game and the community, he was named the 2025 Golf Professional of the Year by the Massachusetts Chapter of the New England PGA. His dedication also landed him a seat on the New England PGA board, where he previously held the position of president. Sibley was not just a pro; he was a valued friend and colleague.

A Community-Oriented Leader

Known for his commitment to growing the game, Sibley initiated and ran the Summer Junior Golf Clinic aimed at children in Lynn. He also organized introductory golf series sessions for elementary school students, ensuring that the love for golf would continue to flourish in future generations. His efforts made a lasting impact on the community.

A True Friend and Mentor

David’s character shone brightest in his relationships with fellow golfers. Steve Murphy, the superintendent at Gannon, shared that even just before his passing, Sibley had found joy in playing a round of golf with him. Colleagues and friends cherished their time with him and will remember him fondly.

Remembering a Legacy

Chris Carter, co-owner of Golf Facilities Management Inc., applauded Sibley for his dedication and passion towards the game; he was a person who gave his all. Bob Cross, president of the Gannon Men’s Inner Club, spoke about Sibley’s unwavering respect for the game and his commitment to work. Likewise, Patty Roderick, president of the Ladies Inner Club, emphasized Sibley’s advocacy for women in golf and how he always aimed to uplift and support them.

A Personal Touch

For many, including Jason Newhall from the Gannon Building Association, Sibley was considered family. His positive attitude, even during his illness, served as an inspiration to all who knew him. Young golfers like Shea Newhall credited him for not only teaching them about the game but also instilling valuable lessons about respect and sportsmanship.

A Final Farewell

David Sibley leaves behind a tremendous legacy within the golf community that will be remembered for years to come. A Memorial Mass has been scheduled for Friday, November 14, 2025, at St. Pius V Church in Lynn, with visiting hours preceding the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the David Sibley Memorial Fund or the Junior Golf Program at Gannon Golf Course.
