Franklin Says Farewell to Samuel F. Reichl Jr., a Beloved Golf Course Owner and Family Man
On December 29, 2025, the community of Franklin mourned the loss of a cherished icon, Samuel F. Reichl Jr., who passed away at the age of 90. Samuel’s journey began on June 5, 1935, in McKees Rocks, where he was born to Samuel F. Reichl Sr. and Vera Marencel Reichl. He left a legacy that many will remember fondly, not just for his contribution to the sport of golf but also as a devoted family man.
A Legend in the Golf Community
Samuel’s passion for golf was evident throughout his life. In 1985, he purchased the beloved Sleepy Hollow Golf Course, and it wasn’t long before he became known as the ‘Legend of Sleepy Hollow.’ His dedication to the course turned it into a hub for golf lovers in the area. Samuel enjoyed nothing more than hitting the greens and sharing memorable golfing trips with friends, particularly to popular destinations like Myrtle Beach. A highlight of his golfing adventures included a trip to Pebble Beach, a trip that many golfers only dream about.
A Heart Full of Love and Family
On January 27, 1954, Samuel married Gertrude M. Hufnagel, creating a partnership that lasted nearly 59 years until her passing on January 8, 2013. Samuel’s dedication to family extended beyond his marriage, as he is survived by two loving children: Shirley Antolik (married to Stephen) of Pittsburgh and Janet Henderson (married to Mike) of Franklin. The proud father also enjoyed spending time with his grandson, Albert (Chip) Abramovic.
Samuel’s family described him as a devoted father and grandfather who brought joy to everyone around him. His warmth and kindness made him a treasured friend to many throughout his lifetime. Those who knew him understand the void left by his passing, especially after the loss of his brothers – Frederick and Robert – and his sister, Cecilia, in previous years.

The Reichl family announced that funeral arrangements will be handled by Huff-Guthrie Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the funeral home from noon to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
