Gary Shea, Esteemed Photographer and Community Volunteer, Passes Away at 85
Burlington is mourning the loss of a truly remarkable man. Gary Shea, a beloved photographer and passionate community volunteer, passed away on December 20, 2025, at the age of 85. Gary’s journey in life was one filled with love, adventure, and a strong commitment to his family and community.
Born on August 14, 1940, in Windsor, Ontario, Gary found his soulmate in Pat Shea when they married in 1969. Their partnership blossomed into over 56 years of love and companionship that many admired. Gary leaves behind a loving family, including his sister Nola Cartner and brothers Giles, Lyle, and Richard, along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A Life Filled with Passion
Gary was not just a family man; he was an enthusiast for life. His adventures in skiing began at the family cottage, where he took it upon himself to teach many relatives the joys of gliding down snowy hills. This love for skiing took him and Pat across North America in search of the perfect snow, demonstrating his adventurous spirit.
In the warmer months, Gary enjoyed sailing around Lake Ontario, soaking in the beauty of nature. He later traded in his sailboat for a set of golf clubs, becoming an integral part of the golf community at Hidden Lake Golf Club. There, he participated in the Senior Men’s League and played in the Wednesday Men’s League, using his organizational skills to help run the Senior Men’s League for several years. Every November, Gary and Pat organized a beloved trip to Myrtle Beach with friends for some unforgettable golf.
Career and Community Contributions
Gary’s academic achievements set the stage for a successful career. He graduated from McMaster University in 1963 with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering and began working at Stelco the same year. He dedicated 35 years of his life to the company, retiring in 1998, but not before completing an MBA and even teaching metallurgical courses. After his retirement, Gary was active in advocating for pension rights and benefits, demonstrating his commitment to his colleagues at the Stelco Salaried Pensioners Organization (SSPO).
A true community pillar, Gary also made substantial contributions to the Bruce Trail for over 50 years. He initiated the Land Steward Program, organizing workshops and even took on the role of Director of Land Stewards for the Iroquoia Section. In recognition of his dedication, he was honored with the title of Land Steward Emeritus in 2022.
His creative talents shone brightly through his photography. As a distinguished member of the Latow Camera Club at The Burlington Art Gallery, Gary served as Secretary, Treasurer, and President. His passion for photography culminated in an impressive exhibition titled *“Around the World… Impressions from the Seven Continents,”* showcasing his travels to over 70 countries through thousands of stunning slides and photographs.
A Man of Celebration and Tradition
Gary was known for throwing memorable parties, including a cherished family tradition of hosting a pig roast for over 30 years. He even created the *“Ross Parker Trophy For Exuberance,”* which he proudly won seven times before retiring the award.
In the later years of his life, Gary faced the challenges of Corticobasal Disease, diagnosed six years prior to his passing. However, his spirit remained strong, buoyed by the love and support he received from friends, neighbors, and organizations such as Bayshore Health Care and Margaret’s Place Hospice.
In keeping with Gary’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. A Celebration of Life will be arranged for a later date. Those looking to honor his memory can make donations to the Bruce Trail Conservancy, Margaret’s Place Hospice, McMaster University, or The Art Gallery of Burlington.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Smith’s Funeral Home in Burlington, where Gary’s spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him.
