South Carolina Residents Can Access Help from Federal, State, and Local Government in the Aftermath of Hurricane Helene

As South Carolina grapples with the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene, one of the state’s deadliest storms, assistance from federal, state, and local agencies is vital. These organizations are mobilizing to provide essential support to those affected by the disaster.

Emergency Shelters and Support

Residents in need of immediate shelter or support can turn to local emergency shelters set up across the state. Among the key locations are:

  • Newberry High School (Medical Needs Friendly)
  • Barnwell Elementary School
  • Kirby Memorial Baptist Church
  • Merriwether Elementary School
  • Hillcrest High School
  • College Street Baptist Church
  • Spartanburg Shelter at GB Hodges Center (Pet Friendly)
  • Glenwood Baptist Church (Pet Friendly)
  • Greenwood Family YMCA
  • First United Methodist Church

A full list of shelters can be accessed here.

Medical Needs Assistance

Assistance is available for residents who rely on power-dependent medical equipment such as ventilators or oxygen tanks. These individuals can call the Department of Public Health Careline at 1-855-472-3432 for triage into a Medical Needs Shelter.

Hurricane Helene Information Line

Residents with questions about the state’s response to Hurricane Helene or safety precautions can call a toll-free hotline at 1-866-246-0133. Operators with the State’s Public Information Phone System are available round the clock.

FEMA Assistance

Residents can apply for federal disaster assistance through FEMA. This aid includes assistance for temporary housing, home repairs, and other hurricane-related expenses.

Food Assistance for Students

Several school districts across the Midlands are offering free meals for students impacted by Hurricane Helene. This initiative includes districts such as Richland One, Richland Two, Lexington Two, Lexington-Richland Five, Saluda School District and School District of Newberry County.
