Residents Express Reservations, Despite Approval Plan Moves to Next Phase

In a significant move that could transform the local housing market, the Horry County Planning Commission in South Carolina has given the green light to a proposal aimed at building almost 140 homes along McDowell Shortcut Road.
This approval was granted regardless of stark rejection expressed by community members who voiced concerns about the project’s potential impact on their neighborhood. These oppositions, however, did not prevent the commission from moving forward with the sizable residential development project.
Community Pushback Against The Proposal
During the critical meeting where the proposal was deliberated, four participants spoke out, with each voicing their reservations against the planned project. Even when an impromptu vote was taken of those present, the tally was overwhelmingly against the plan, demonstrating stark public opinion against the new development.
Opinions of the Opposition
A local resident, Brian Sweeney, pulled no punches when he expressed his displeasure with the decision. He mentioned his belief that the project’s approval was influenced by the endorsement of the greater Burgess Community Association and insinuated that the association’s endorsement no longer reflected the pulse of the community.
According to Sweeney, “That association is essentially a bunch of old fossils. They’re defunct, they don’t do anything. They vote in favor of everything just because nobody really participates anymore. That room was filled with people who vote, and they were not happy with this.”
Next Steps For The Proposal
Despite the widespread discontent over the proposed development, the decision from the commission sends the proposal to the next level, namely the county council. The council is expected to conduct its review before making a final decision, indicating that the process is far from over.
