Jacksonville Golf Stars Making Waves in National Tournaments
In an exciting week for Jacksonville’s junior golf community, young talents are stepping into the spotlight as they compete in national tournaments. The stage has been set, and our local stars are not holding back!
Tyler Jones: A Star on the Rise
Meet Tyler Jones, a nine-year-old budding golf prodigy who just added a big feather to his cap by winning the Boys 8-9 National Junior Golf Tour national tournament. The event took place at the beautiful River Oaks Golf Plantation in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Tyler emerged victorious, showcasing skills beyond his years. Currently, he’s sharpening his game at Swingin’ Things & Fletcher’s Landing golf course right here in Jacksonville. Keep an eye on this young talent; he’s just getting started!
Miles Russell’s Spectacular U.S. Amateur Debut
On another front, sixteen-year-old Miles Russell from Jacksonville Beach made quite the impression during his first-ever U.S. Amateur match held at the iconic Olympic Club in San Francisco. Competing on August 13, he faced off against Travis Woolf from Fort Worth, Texas, and came out on top with a convincing 4-and-2 victory. Russell started strong, building a three-up advantage through just four holes, and his lead never dipped below two holes. He clinched his match by dominating the par-5 16th hole with a solid par.
Next up for Russell is a highly anticipated match against Auburn sophomore Billy Davis, who he has faced in previous competitions. In his first match, Davis posted a 4-and-3 win over Aston Lim from Union City, California. Russell finished solo third in stroke-play qualifying with an impressive 4-under 136, after chalking up a remarkably low second round score of 66. In contrast, Davis tied for 23rd with a 1-over 141.
Exciting Days Ahead at the U.S. Amateur Championship
The ongoing U.S. Amateur tournament is bustling with matches, as players are set to compete in two more rounds on August 14 and 15. This leads to the semifinals on August 16 and a thrilling 36-hole championship match on August 17. What excitement awaits our local champ!
Highlights from the Jacksonville Area Golf Association Championship
Leading the charge in the JAGA Championship is Danny Erickson, who shot an exceptional 6-under-par 138. Erickson finished off strong by birdieing the 18th hole, stretching his lead even further. Unfortunately, Cameron Reed faced disqualification after a mishap with his scorecard. As the final round approaches, tee times will kick off early at 7:45 a.m., with the lead group set to tee off at 10:25 a.m.
