Coastal Carolina players celebrating victory during a game

News Summary

Jacob Morrison delivered an outstanding performance for Coastal Carolina, clinching a 6-2 win over Oregon State in the College World Series. The Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year showcased his talent by allowing just one run in 7 2/3 innings and striking out seven batters. With this victory, Morrison improved his record to 12-0 and continues to be a crucial player for the Chanticleers as they pursue their second national championship title, building on their success from 2016.

Conway, South Carolina – Coastal Carolina’s Jacob Morrison showcased an exceptional performance on June 15, leading his team to a 6-2 victory over Oregon State in the College World Series. Named the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year for 2025, Morrison’s impressive outing not only solidified Coastal Carolina’s standing in the tournament but also extended their remarkable win streak to 25 games.

The 6-foot-8 right-handed pitcher exhibited remarkable control, allowing just one run on five hits over 7 2/3 innings, while striking out seven batters. His dominance was particularly evident when he retired 16 consecutive batters between the third and eighth innings, marking him as only the third pitcher since 2011 to achieve this milestone in a College World Series game. With this victory, Morrison improved his season record to an unbeatable 12-0, further lowering his earned run average (ERA) from 2.15 to 2.08. This ERA ranks as the sixth-best among college players this season and stands out as the best among active pitchers in the College World Series.

In terms of game statistics, Morrison pitched a total of 109 pitches, completing 79 for strikes and notably did not issue any walks during the matchup. His strong performance in the NCAA tournament includes previous outings where he struck out six batters in a six-inning appearance against No. 4 Auburn and allowed four runs across five innings versus East Carolina. If Coastal Carolina advances to the national championship series, he will be eligible to take the mound once again.

The Chanticleers benefited from their opponent’s mistakes early in the game, scoring three unearned runs in the first inning due to errors by Oregon State’s defense. The Beavers, who entered the tournament with the seventh-best fielding percentage of .982, struggled to capitalize on their usual solid defense during this game, ultimately leading to their defeat.

This win propels Coastal Carolina into the Bracket 1 final, where they are set to face either Louisville or Oregon State again. The team is on a quest for its second national championship title, aiming to replicate their success from 2016.

Morrison’s journey to this triumphant moment has not been without challenges. He made a commanding return to the field this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, which sidelined him for the entirety of the 2024 season. His determination and competitive drive are evident, as he consistently strives for excellence and aims to dominate during games. Coastal Carolina’s head coach, Kevin Schnall, acknowledged Morrison’s growth and competitive spirit, illustrating how he embodies the team’s values of hunger and humility.

The compelling narrative of Jacob Morrison, combined with Coastal Carolina’s collective efforts, underscores their potential and ambition as they continue their pursuit of championship glory in this esteemed tournament.
