Landenberg, PA – A Loving Memory: Janet Reid Smith Wolf Passes Away at 82

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Janet Reid Smith Wolf, a cherished educator and community leader, who died peacefully on November 9, 2025, at her home in Landenberg, PA. Surrounded by her beloved family, Janet left a legacy filled with love, education, and service.

A Life Well-Lived

Born on February 24, 1943, in Mooresville, NC, Janet was the daughter of Arthur Lynn Smith, Sr. and Gladys Davidson Smith. Growing up in a large, close-knit family with two older brothers, Arthur Lynn Smith, Jr. and John T. Smith, Janet quickly became the spirited “Aunt Janet” at the young age of 11.

Her journey took a pivotal turn when she met her husband, Terrence Lee Wolf, at Catawba College in Salisbury, NC. Their love blossomed into marriage in August 1965, shortly after they graduated, setting the foundation for a family that would thrive for decades.

A Community Treasure

Janet spent an unforgettable 40 years in Rising Sun, MD, where she and Terrence raised two children, Tracy and Rick. Known for her festive Christmas Eve open house, this joyful gathering became a beloved tradition within the community. With a close circle of friends, Janet also reveled in playing cards, especially Bridge.

Her career in education spanned over two decades, with Janet teaching English and Health & PE in the Cecil County Public School system, primarily at Rising Sun High School. Recognized for her no-nonsense and fair approach, she made a lasting impact on her students. Beyond teaching, Janet was a dedicated coach for Rising Sun Little League softball, profoundly influencing the lives of countless young athletes over her remarkable 30-year coaching career.

A Heart of Gold

Janet’s selfless spirit extended beyond the classroom. She contributed to her community by volunteering at Union Hospital, decorating Christmas trees, and delivering meals with the Meals on Wheels program. An avid golfer, she was a proud member of Chantilly Manor, Newark, and Lake Wales Country Clubs, where she set numerous records as the Ladies Club Champion and playfully navigated courses along the east coast.

Her adventurous side took her to many favorite vacation spots, including North Carolina, Myrtle Beach, and New England, where she cherished moments in Bar Harbor. Whether it was gardening, baking, or engaging in puzzles and games, Janet brought warmth and joy into everything she did.

Family Bonds

Janet was lovingly referred to as “Nan” by her treasured grandchildren, creating precious memories that will be held close to their hearts. She is survived by her husband, Terry Wolf, children Tracy (Lee) Curry and Rick (Tonya) Wolf, and grandchildren, including Nikolas (Erika), Reid, Grace Reckner, and many others in their blended families. Also left to cherish her memory are brothers-in-law Doug (Mary Anne) Wolf and Chuck Wolf, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Leaving a Legacy

Janet’s remarkable legacy encompasses her vibrant personality and her unwavering acts of service to the community. A celebration of her life is set to take place on February 21, 2026, at Newark Country Club. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests donations be made in her memory to the Rising Sun Little League or a charity of choice.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Brandywine River Valley Hospice for their compassionate care during Janet’s final days. Janet Reid Smith Wolf’s spirit will forever dwell in the hearts of those she touched.
