Myrtle Beach Prepares for a Fresh Look at King’s North Course

Hey Myrtle Beach! Exciting things are happening at the King’s North Course at Myrtle Beach National as it undergoes a significant renovation that promises to enhance the golfing experience for all players. This major project, spearheaded by talented architect Brandon Johnson, kicked off its latest phase on May 26, 2025, when the back nine of the course was officially closed for renovations.

What’s New Since the Last Makeover?

The King’s North Course hasn’t seen such an extensive overhaul in nearly three decades, with the last major changes occurring back in 1995-96. This time around, the goal is to honor the legendary vision of one of golf’s greats, Arnold Palmer, by creating a course that is both incredibly fun and visually stunning. The front nine of the course already received a facelift, reopening on October 3, 2024, and players have shared some enthusiastic feedback regarding the improvements.

A Deep Dive into the Renovation Plans

With a keen eye for detail, Brandon Johnson, who dedicated 17 years previously to the Arnold Palmer Design Group, is now tasked with reimagining several aspects of the back nine. One standout change is at the famed par-3 12th hole, featuring SC-shaped bunkers that will breathe new life into this already beloved spot. Golfers can look forward to strategically improved options for their approach and recovery shots thanks to enhanced landscaping.

Speaking of changes, the renovation will expand and upgrade greens throughout the course, replacing the current Champion Bermudagrass with the more resilient TifEagle Bermudagrass. Golfers will see some substantial alterations, including the enlargement of select greens by up to 36 percent, providing additional pin placements and enhancing overall playability.

Transforming Holes for an Elevated Experience

There’s more on the way as some back nine holes will transform remarkably. The sixth hole will lose three of its fairway bunkers, while the 18th hole will undergo an extensive reimagining, reducing its total number of bunkers. On the 10th hole, a new fairway bunker is set to come into play, making the second-shot landing area more engaging for golfers aiming for the green.

Another exciting change includes a possible shift in the tee box on the 13th hole, moving it back by up to 20 yards. This alteration is sure to affect the sharp dogleg left trajectory and add a new twist for players trying to strategize their shots. As if that wasn’t enough, the 14th and 15th holes are slated to see dramatic changes in the waste areas, adding to the beauty of the course while keeping it challenging.

What About the Clubhouse?

It’s not just the greens and fairways getting pampered; the clubhouse will also see improvements as part of this project! By the end of 2025, plans are in place to convert the clubhouse into a full-service restaurant that will be accessible to the public. This means that after a long day on the course, players can sit back, relax, and enjoy some delicious food—a fantastic addition for both golfers and non-golfers alike!

A Bright Future for King’s North

The renovations happening at King’s North are not just about making the course prettier; they’re designed to enhance the entire golf experience. Founders Group International, the team behind King’s North and several other courses in the Myrtle Beach area, set a clear course for the future with these improvements. With an emphasis on playability and aesthetics, the King’s North Course is all set to become a true gem in Myrtle Beach’s already impressive lineup of golf offerings.

Mark your calendars: the back nine is expected to back in action by September 1, 2025, and if the positive reception of the front nine is any indication, we’re in for a treat!
