Myrtle Beach: A Year-Round Delight for All!
Welcome to Myrtle Beach! This beautiful coastal gem located in the Greater Myrtle Beach Grand Strand area isn’t just a summer hotspot anymore; it’s blossoming into an year-round destination for vacationers, retirees, and newcomers alike. With its stunning beaches, world-class golf, and incredible entertainment options, there’s no shortage of reasons to love the Grand Strand.
A Growing Hub of Activity
Over the past decade, the Greater Myrtle Beach area has seen remarkable growth, with the population soaring by more than 30% from 2010 to 2020. This surge is reflected in the increasing number of people who choose to call this area home, especially in Horry County, which has become one of the fastest-growing counties in South Carolina. With a wealth of attractions and opportunities, it’s no wonder that over 20 million visitors flock to these shores each year, making tourism the backbone of the local economy.
Interestingly, while tourism remains vital, the economy is diversifying. New job opportunities are burgeoning in sectors such as healthcare, education, real estate, and technology, sparking interest among remote workers and entrepreneurs. The COVID-19 pandemic shifted many people’s perspectives on work-life balance, and Myrtle Beach emerged as an attractive option to blend work and play.
Population Projections and Infrastructure Developments
Urban planners suggest that by 2035, Horry County’s population may crest 500,000, positioning it as one of the largest counties in the Southeastern United States. As growth continues, we can expect to see exciting developments in multi-family housing and sustainability ventures. Local leaders are focusing on creating a more diverse and resilient economy while ensuring that tourism flourishes for years to come.
Current initiatives emphasize attracting higher education institutions and supporting startups. As part of this effort, workforce development programs are crucial. With ongoing infrastructure upgrades and environmental preservation efforts, the area is gearing up to handle its growth with care.
Challenges of Rapid Development
However, with growth comes its share of challenges. The area must navigate the balance between development and environmental sustainability, tackling rampant traffic congestion and addressing the affordable housing shortages that can accompany a booming population. Engaging the community and utilizing smart planning will be pivotal in retaining the unique charm of the Grand Strand.
Tech Innovations on the Horizon
On an exciting note, DC BLOX has announced plans to expand its Myrtle Beach cable landing station, which aims to enhance digital infrastructure while creating subsea cable capacity. This expansion includes acquiring around 20 acres within the Myrtle Beach International Technology and Aerospace Park and will support up to five additional subsea cables!
Ever since DC BLOX opened the first Myrtle Beach Cable Landing Station, MYR1, in 2023, the facility has held the title of the largest of its kind on the Eastern Seaboard. The new expansion (MYR2) will add 20MW of power, promising even greater connectivity for residents and businesses alike.
A Growing Senior Community
Interestingly, even though Myrtle Beach is known for its beaches and entertainment, the region is also becoming popular among seniors. In fact, the area witnessed a 6.3% increase in residents aged 65 and older last year, making it the fastest-growing metro area for seniors in the U.S. The senior population here has already grown by more than 22% during the 2020s, making up over a quarter of the area’s 413,000 residents.
Engaging the Community for a Brighter Future
LinkedIn even named Myrtle Beach one of the 2025 Top Cities on the Rise thanks to its booming job market and career growth. To ensure that the community continues to flourish amid all these changes, the Myrtle Beach city government is reaching out to residents and visitors to understand their needs through a comprehensive survey.
This survey is designed to help shape a better future for Myrtle Beach, tackling the challenges brought forth by both the influx of visitors and the growing population. Together, with the support of the community, Myrtle Beach is poised for a bright and exciting future!
