News Summary

In a surprising turn of events, a small hammerhead shark fell from the sky at Myrtle Beach during a disc golf game. On May 18, 2025, players at Splinter City Disc Golf Course were treated to an unusual sight as an osprey, chased by crows, dropped the shark nearby. This rare incident showcases the unique wildlife of South Carolina and highlights the importance of shark conservation.

Myrtle Beach Strikes It Rich with a Sky-High Surprise!

Well folks, it appears that Myrtle Beach has experienced an extraordinary event that no one was expecting – a small hammerhead shark came crashing down during a friendly game of disc golf! Yes, you read that right! On May 18, 2025, while players were busy enjoying their game at the Splinter City Disc Golf Course, a remarkable sight unfolded above them.

An Unusual Delivery

As players tossed their discs into the air, a majestic osprey took to the skies above, clutching an unknown object in its talons. However, this was no ordinary meal; it was a small shark! The osprey was being chased by two raucous crows, which probably made for quite the aerial display as they swooped and dove after the feathered fisherman. The chase went on for a while, but eventually, the osprey was forced to relinquish its grip on the little hammerhead, dropping it right into a nearby tree.

Witnessing the Shark’s Fall

One witness, Jonathan Marlowe, shared his experience on social media, delighting and somewhat perplexing his followers with photos and details of this unbelievable scene. He described how he first caught sight of the bird carrying the shark, bewildered as he wondered just what sort of creature was being transported through the sky. It’s not every day that a hammerhead shark, with its distinctive mallet-shaped head, is seen on dry land!

Shark Facts Galore!

The dropped shark measured just over a foot long, and while ospreys – often referred to as “fish hawks” – are known for their talent in hunting aquatic prey, they usually stick to fish no longer than 12 inches. This little hammerhead, while it may have been a light load for the osprey, had certainly made everyone at the disc golf course believe they were witnessing something truly one-of-a-kind. Speculation suggests that the osprey might have carried the shark at least half a mile from the ocean before it ended up in the trees.

A Rare Encounter

Finding a hammerhead shark on land is considered an extremely rare occurrence, making this a “once-in-a-lifetime experience” for all the participants at Splinter City! In coastal waters around South Carolina, the state’s Department of Natural Resources has identified three types of hammerhead sharks: the bonnethead, the scalloped hammerhead, and the great hammerhead. In fact, a new species, the Carolina hammerhead, was discovered in the same area in 2013, marking a unique addition to the hammerhead family!

A Predatory Presence

Interestingly, the same day the hammerhead shark plummeted to earth, a massive 1,653-pound great white shark named Contender was being tracked off the coast of Myrtle Beach. Contender, tagged by Ocearch earlier in January, has gained some fame for his sharky escapades along the Grand Strand coast. Although great whites are commonly spotted offshore, they typically choose to stay away from shallow waters and the humanoids that inhabit them.

A Chance for Education

South Carolina waters are rich with shark species, hosting dogfish, blacknose, bull, and tiger sharks, along with the infamous hammerhead. Fortunately, shark attacks are quite rare, with only two unprovoked shark bites reported in the state in 2024. This unusual occurrence in Myrtle Beach is a great opportunity for education and awareness about these magnificent creatures. Conservation efforts are essential, as sharks face threats from human activities including overfishing and pollution.

Conclusion

So, next time you’re out enjoying a game of disc golf or simply soaking up the sun at the beautiful Myrtle Beach, keep your eyes on the sky. You never know when another fantastic event might drop right in front of you!
