The lawsuit was filed in December 2024, stemming from an event that took place on April 8, 2024, when three individuals attempted to break into his home.
The incident began around 9:30 p.m. when King was abruptly awakened by a loud noise while resting on his couch. Initially, he investigated the source of the sound with a firearm but did not find anyone on his property. However, approximately two hours later, he heard glass shatter from his back door. An intruder had reportedly thrown a rock and shot a firearm into his home, striking King’s hand and causing severe injuries that required multiple surgeries.
The gunshot wound affected an artery, resulting in significant blood loss. King underwent a total of six surgeries, but the injuries have led to lasting complications, including chronic pain and difficulty performing daily tasks, such as tying his shoes or playing with his grandchildren. Despite his physical injuries, King expressed gratitude for being alive following the harrowing experience.
According to King, the intruders were on the premises for about two-and-a-half hours prior to law enforcement’s and security’s arrival, highlighting concerns about the effectiveness of the security measures in place. It took approximately 30 minutes for police and security personnel to respond once the break-in was reported, which King deemed unacceptable. During their arrival, police allegedly questioned King about narcotics in his home before addressing his injuries, fueling claims of racial bias regarding the urgency of their responses based on his skin color.
In his lawsuit, King asserts that both Waccamaw Management and Allied Universal Security demonstrated negligence by failing to provide adequate security services. He claims that the HOA has not reached out to him for support, nor offered any form of apology since the incident. King believes that the HOA is attempting to minimize the incident to preserve the community’s image as a safe environment for prospective buyers and residents, particularly those interested in the Grand Dunes golf community.
As a direct consequence of his injuries, King has been unable to work for more than a year, further complicating his recovery and rehabilitation process. Despite these challenges, he remains thankful for the support of his family and friends during this difficult time.
Currently, only one of the alleged intruders has been taken into custody—26-year-old Jayquan Pollard—while the remaining suspects remain at large. The ongoing legal proceedings and the circumstances surrounding the incident continue to raise questions about safety and the responsibilities of property management and security services in residential communities.
