Myrtle Beach’s Exciting New Investment: A $6 Million Pickleball Complex!
Myrtle Beach has just announced plans for a thrilling new development that will have you reaching for your paddles. Get ready because an impressive mentioned $6 million investment is on the way to construct a state-of-the-art pickleball complex at The Shelby, the beachside property formerly known as the Sandcastle Oceanfront Resort. This project is all set to add an exciting recreational option to our beautiful coastal city!
What’s Inside the Complex?
The new pickleball center is set to feature a total of eight private pickleball courts, split evenly between indoor and outdoor setups. And if that wasn’t enough, there will be a clubhouse and a pool for players to chill out after a great game. Imagine an afternoon spent basking in the sun, enjoying a friendly pickleball match, and then cooling off in the pool – sounds fantastic, right?
Prime Location
The Shelby’s location is also pretty prime! It sits on the third row between 18th and 19th Avenues North, stretching from Withers Drive to behind Cook Out. This ideal spot means plenty of accessibility and a lovely view for players and spectators alike!
Myrtle Beach Embraces Pickleball
It’s clear that Myrtle Beach is all in on the pickleball craze. City officials recently approved this project, acknowledging how rapidly the sport is gaining popularity among locals and visitors. Ken May, the city’s Planning and Zoning Director, pointed out that the development could also include two towers along Ocean Boulevard, alongside parking decks and green spaces on the third-row sections. Nice, right? However, due to economic factors affecting high-rise tower constructions, the developers have chosen to pivot to this pickleball project instead. They’re taking advantage of high demand and financial feasibility by focusing on dedicated pickleball facilities.
Ongoing Developments
Gregory Duckworth from Environmental Concepts LLC emphasized the need for dedicated pickleball courts in the area given the surge of players. With this development project, we can expect an immediate pickleball experience by summer, aiming to complete everything within two and a half years.
But that’s not all! The city has agreed to lease six acres of land for a standalone pickleball facility called PicklePort, set to be located near Whispering Pines Golf Course. This facility is projected to cost around $5 million and will boast 24 courts, including amenities like a snack bar and outdoor covered courts for tournaments.
Future Facilities to Look Forward To
And if you’re worried that’s not enough pickleball magic, fear not! Plans are already in place for another facility, the Dink District, projected to open in Carolina Forest in 2026. This venue will feature 14 pro-grade courts in a climate-controlled environment, so players can enjoy the game year-round.
Something for Everyone
The current development area includes a parking deck and two other nearby motels, The Fin’s Inn and The Towers, which will remain open to support local business while the new pickleball complex takes shape. The intention behind these investments is not just to cater to professional players but also to engage the community and local families in a fun, active lifestyle.
Myrtle Beach is clearly embracing the pickleball boom, showing us that there’s always room for fun and games in our beautiful city. So, whether you’re a seasoned player or a curious beginner, keep an eye out for what’s coming—this new complex promises to be a hit for everyone!
