News Summary

A 17-year-old employee of Peaches Corner in Myrtle Beach has been charged with murder after a shooting incident late at night. The suspect, Evany McCray, faces multiple charges following an altercation with the victim, which resulted in one death and another person hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The shooting occurred despite a significant police presence in the area, prompting renewed discussions on gun violence among teenagers and local legislation regarding firearm safety.

Myrtle Beach – A 17-year-old employee of the iconic Peaches Corner restaurant has been charged with murder following a shooting incident that took place inside the establishment late on June 27, 2025. The shooting, which occurred around 11:15 p.m., resulted in one fatality, though the identity of the deceased has not been publicly disclosed.

The suspect, identified as Evany McCray from Conway, faces multiple charges, including murder, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a weapon by a minor. Law enforcement officers acted swiftly, apprehending McCray less than 24 seconds after the shots were fired.

Initial investigations indicate that a confrontation occurred between McCray and the victim just before the shooting. Witnesses reported that the victim entered Peaches Corner and exchanged words with the suspect, who then allegedly brandished a firearm from his waistband and discharged it. One shot struck a person in the lower extremities, necessitating hospitalization; however, their injuries have been classified as non-life-threatening. The police have yet to confirm the nature of the relationship between McCray and the victim or whether the victim was armed at the time.

Law Enforcement Response

At the time of the incident, the Myrtle Beach Police Department had over 50 officers deployed in the vicinity as part of a safety initiative. The swift response was highlighted by Assistant Police Chief Chris Smith, who expressed frustration at the occurrence of violence in a location already under increased police presence.

This incident marks the second deadly shooting in Myrtle Beach in a span of two months, following another shooting on April 26, 2025, which resulted in one death and multiple injuries. The rising trend of gun violence, especially among teenagers, has prompted Police Chief Amy Prock to emphasize the department’s commitment to addressing this pressing issue.

Community and Legislative Actions

In light of these events, discussions are ongoing with local legislators concerning the state’s open carry law, as well as community education efforts aimed at promoting firearm safety and security. As part of the investigation into the recent shooting, police are urging anyone with information, including photographs or videos related to the incident, to come forward.

Peaches Corner’s Historical Significance

Peaches Corner, a beloved landmark in Myrtle Beach, has been a fixture of the community since its opening in 1937, predating the city’s official incorporation. Following the shooting, the restaurant reopened the following day, continuing its tradition of serving patrons despite the tragic incident that transpired within its walls.

The investigation into this shooting continues, with authorities working diligently to uncover further details surrounding the events that led to this tragic loss of life. As the community reflects on the implications of such violence, the Myrtle Beach Police Department remains focused on enhancing safety measures and preventing future occurrences.
