This past Sunday, the beautiful city of My Myrtle Beach came alive with determination, camaraderie, and a whole lot of heart as residents gathered for the 7th annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk. This event isn’t just another run; it’s a heartfelt tribute to those who lost their lives during the tragic terrorist attacks on 9/11. Rain didn’t put a damper on the spirits of those who showed up at Grand Park in The Market Common, ready to lace up their sneakers and hit the pavement!
A Cause Worth Running For
Tunnel to Towers is a foundation that has made a lasting impact since its inception, providing mortgage-free homes to injured veterans and families of fallen first responders. Each year, this run honors the courageous steps of Stephen Siller, a New York firefighter who ran heroically towards the Twin Towers when disaster struck. His legacy continues to inspire many across the nation.
Local Heroes on the Ground
Captain Evans from the Myrtle Beach Fire Department shared how significant this organization is, stating, “We’ve seen it help folks here locally.” He recalled a heartbreaking time a few years back when a North Myrtle Beach Police Officer lost his life in the line of duty, and how this incredible foundation helped pay off that officer’s family home. With passion in his voice, Captain Evans expressed his pride not just for the event, but for the community that came together for such a great cause.

It was truly a sight to see! Runners of all ages and abilities showed up, proving that they were ready to support this great mission. Victor Beloded, the first-place runner of the day, couldn’t contain his enthusiasm: “It makes me feel proud for this country that you know there are so many runners of different levels that came today to support this great cause.” His words truly encapsulated the bright spirit of the day!

Among the many participants was Tony Gray, a 9/11 first responder.
