News Summary

Prestwick Country Club in Florence, SC, is elevating its 17th fairway by one foot as part of drainage improvements. This renovation includes updates to drainage and irrigation systems and the removal of a bunker at the 10th green to reduce water accumulation. The club, which is closed for greens aeration, has undergone renovations for three consecutive years, focusing on enhancing playability and beauty amidst broader improvements in the Grand Strand golf market.

Florence, SC – Prestwick Country Club is elevating its 17th fairway by approximately one foot as part of ongoing enhancements aimed at improving drainage in this critical area of the course. The renovation, which also includes lifting the drainage and irrigation systems, is designed to minimize water accumulation near the creek that runs along the left side of the fairway and fronts the green.

The Prestwick Country Club is currently closed for greens aeration and is not expected to reopen until July 27. As part of this renovation effort, a small bunker in front of the left side of the 10th green has been eliminated to further prevent water collection during heavy rains.

This is the third consecutive year of renovations at the Prestwick Country Club. Previous projects have included the rebuilding of bulkhead retaining walls on holes 4, 5, 9, 16, and 18; the addition of a narrow bunker on the 16th hole; and upgrades to the clubhouse facility.

Prestwick is among several golf courses along the Grand Strand that are undergoing significant improvements and repairs. While some courses are closing for renovations, others remain partially open. For example, King’s North Course at Myrtle Beach National Golf Club completely closed on May 26 for a major renovation project slated to last two summers, with an anticipated reopening on October 1. This project will include design changes to increase open areas and enhance bunker visibility, as well as ground changes to switch greens from Champion ultradwarf Bermudagrass to TifEagle ultradwarf Bermuda.

Despite its full closure, the front nine of King’s North has remained open for play, ensuring at least 36 holes are available at Myrtle Beach National during the renovations. Litchfield Country Club is also amidst renovations, stripping and resodding several greens starting June 22, which have now successfully reopened.

Additionally, the Avocet Course at Wild Wing Plantation has seen closure for the past month to allow its greens to recover after aeration, with reopening scheduled for July 22. Meanwhile, Whispering Pines Golf Club has been closed since May for significant upgrades to its greens, with a planned reopening of September 1.

Other local golf courses, including Sea Trail Golf Resort’s Maples Course and Thistle Golf Club’s Mackay nine, have also undergone substantial renovations over the summer months.

Amid these renovation efforts, Golf Tourism Solutions (GTS) has stepped in to support recovery initiatives in Western North Carolina, which were impacted by Hurricane Helene, recently organizing a fundraising auction that raised around $20,000 for golf-related recovery efforts.

Prestwick Country Club’s management emphasizes that the renovations are strategically designed to enhance both the beauty and the fairness of the course, affirming the broader commitment to continually improve playability and tackle ongoing maintenance issues. This dedication to improvement underscores a wider trend in the Grand Strand golf market, which is actively seeking to enhance overall golfing experiences for both locals and visitors alike.
