Fully Renovated Facility Provides Hope and Home for Veterans

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – It’s not every day you see hope given physical form, but for the veterans at the fully renovated NardMoor facility, it looks very much like a second chance. This former nursing home has been given a new lease on life by the Eastern Carolina Housing Organization (ECHO), offering temporary housing to homeless veterans, all with a touch of luxury rarely seen before in such settings.

Rebirth of the NardMoor Facility

“It’s a God-given pleasure to be able to provide it,” remarked Joey Smoak, ECHO’s forward-thinking CEO, when describing the state-of-the-art NardMoor facility. With new flooring, roofing, and a commercial kitchen serving three meals a day, ECHO truly went the extra mile to ensure that the veterans have more than just a roof over their heads.

It’s not all work and no play at the NardMoor facility either. Space for relaxation and socialization is plentiful, allowing veterans to feel like they’re not just passing through, but they’re part of a community.

“Best Practice Model” in Veteran Housing

In recognition of the care and consideration put into the renovation, the Veterans Affairs Department has heralded the NardMoor as the regional ‘crown jewel’ of temporary housing. ECHO’s exceptional work turned the NardMoor facility into the leading practice model for Region 7, encompassing Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.

Impact on the Veterans

Veterans occupying the NardMoor facility can attest to the life-changing potential it offers. Army veteran and resident Prezzie Haney called the facility a “top line.” Haney, who has had personal battles with substance abuse, said the personal room and assistance in matters like medical trips, VA claims, and job applications have proven to be sphere-turning.

“In reality, it was the greatest place I could ever come to better my life and get my life back on track,” stated Haney. This testimony is, indeed, a testament to the impact a safe, secure, and caring environment can have on those who have served our country.

Unparalleled Gratitude

These refurbished facilities are more than housing; they also serve as an expression of gratitude towards those who fought for our freedoms. Smoak passionately expresses, “These people served our country, and to say it’s a gratitude for their service would be an understatement.”

The NardMoor facility is a comforting reminder that there are organizations like ECHO that genuinely care and strive to assist our brave veterans in taking steps toward stability and prosperity. This is, indeed, a shining example of the potential for good that exists when we extend our gratitude beyond words and into meaningful action.

Much More than Just a Renovation

Indeed, the NardMoor facility is more than a renovated building. It is a beacon of hope, a testament to what can be achieved with commitment and compassion. As these resilient veterans advance on their new journey, the NardMoor facility stands strong, a lighthouse guiding them towards a future of stability and security. The generosity of ECHO and all involved in the NardMoor project serves as an inspiring example of community care. The facility’s doors stand wide open, its halls echoing with stories yet to be told – stories of perseverance, resilience, and renewal.
