News Summary

The River Oaks Golf Club, a cherished golfing venue in Myrtle Beach, will close its doors on November 30, 2025, after nearly 38 years. A farewell tournament, ‘The Final Round’ Scramble, is set for November 20, 2025, marking an end to an era. The club’s transformation into a residential development will create nearly 600 new homes, reflecting the shifting landscape of the Myrtle Beach area as more golf courses make way for housing projects.

Big Changes on the Horizon for River Oaks Golf Club in Myrtle Beach

The scenic River Oaks Golf Club, a beloved spot for golfers and families alike, is getting ready to close its doors for good on November 30, 2025. After nearly 38 years in operation, the popular golf course will soon transform into a new residential development, marking the end of an era.

A Fitting Farewell Celebration

On November 20, the club will host “The Final Round” Scramble, the last official tournament at this cherished venue. The announcement was met with enthusiasm, and the event quickly sold out after being shared on social media. For just $49 plus tax, participants can enjoy a round at River Oaks one last time.

This week, the club is buzzing with activity, welcoming various groups, including invited golf package providers. Just prior to closing, the venue will also host its last club championship, planned for the weekend before the grand farewell.

Remembering the Rich History

River Oaks has long been noted for its affordable golf options in the Myrtle Beach market, drawing players of all skill levels. Designed by Gene Hamm, the course originally opened in 1987 and featured a stunning 6,800-yard layout. In 1991, the facility expanded its offerings with the addition of a third nine holes called the Bear, but that portion was closed in September 2021.

Over the years, the golf course has hosted numerous charity tournaments, solidifying its position as a community hub. As the closing date approaches, many current and former staff, loyal customers, family, and friends have gathered for a heartfelt farewell dinner at Angelo’s Steak & Pasta, reminiscing about the moments shared on the greens.

Future Development Plans

As one chapter closes, another opens for the River Oaks site. The Bear nine has been sold to Chris Manning of Chris Manning Communities, who plans to see it redeveloped. He has already sold the Bear land to Mungo Homes for further growth, which will pave the way for the construction of 220 housing lots. Furthermore, Manning acquired the remaining 18 holes in February 2024, with plans to create an additional 370 lots on what will be a 172-acre tract of land.

In total, this cumulative development will lead to the creation of nearly 600 new homes on the site of the River Oaks Golf Club. Residents in the area can expect increased traffic and road upgrades to accommodate the growth, with plans to expand River Oaks Drive from two lanes to four lanes in the near future.

Impact on the Surrounding Area

The transformation of River Oaks Golf Club reflects a larger trend within Myrtle Beach, where numerous golf courses have been shut down in favor of housing projects. Other well-known courses facing the same fate include The Witch Golf Links, Farmstead Golf Links, Possum Trot Golf Club, Heather Glen Golf Links, and Indian Wells Golf Club. This redevelopment aims to meet the housing needs of the growing community, which is seeing various new projects, including developments like Waterway Plantation, Waterway Palms, The Bluffs, The Battery on The Waterway, Berkshire Forest, Village Oaks, and Traditions at Carolina Forest.

As the countdown begins to the closing date, River Oaks Golf Club prepares to say goodbye to its loyal patrons and memories that span almost four decades. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or a curious neighbor, there is sure to be a sense of nostalgia as this cherished venue gears up for its final days.
