The renovations aim to enhance playability and overall experience for golfers, making this beloved course even better. With its rich history and commitment to maintaining quality, Whispering Pines looks to solidify its status as a top golfing destination.
Exciting Renovation Ahead for Whispering Pines Golf Course in Myrtle Beach
It’s a big summer for Myrtle Beach as the beloved Whispering Pines Golf Course embarks on an ambitious renovation plan that is set to transform the course into an even more stunning golfing destination. As of the last week of June, the course has officially closed its tee times for the rest of the summer season, all in preparation for a major upgrade that will cost around $1.44 million. The good news? Golfers can expect the course to reopen on September 1, just in time for a beautiful fall round!
A Long-Awaited Makeover
Whispering Pines, which has a rich history of 63 years, has seen very few significant renovations over the years. In fact, aside from replacing pumps and resurfacing the grass just once since it opened, major updates have been sorely needed for quite some time. Chip Smith, the owner of Atlantic Golf Management that operates the course, recognizes that it’s time to give this golfing gem some well-deserved TLC.
What Can Golfers Expect?
This renovation isn’t just a little sprucing up; it’s an extensive overhaul that will encompass several key improvements. Here’s what’s on the docket:
- New Irrigation System: A modern irrigation system will ensure the greens and fairways are adequately watered, promoting better growth and playing conditions.
- Bunker Updates: The bunkers will receive a full facelift, adding to the course’s challenging layout.
- Replanting New Greens: All 18 holes and practice ranges will be regrassed, creating a lush playing surface with Sunday ultradwarf Bermudagrass.
- Parking Lot Repaving: Golfers will enjoy a smoother arrival with improved access through a newly repaved parking lot.
- New Welcome Sign: A shiny new welcome sign that reads “Welcome to the Golf Capital of the World” will greet visitors near the Myrtle Beach Airport exit.
Why Now?
You might wonder why the summer season, which is often the busiest for the Grand Strand, is when the course is closing up. The truth is that the heat drives many golfers to the area’s beautiful beaches during this time. Plus, late spring and early summer are prime for Bermuda grass growth, making this timing for renovation just perfect!
A History of Change
Over the past decade, Whispering Pines has been building up funds to make this renovation a reality. Prior to the management takeover by Atlantic Golf Management in 2014, the course struggled, losing about $250,000 annually. Yet since 2015, the course has been a profitable venture, raking in millions in revenue each year.
In fact, for the last fiscal year (2023-24), the course recorded an impressive 56,700 rounds, generating over $2.46 million. The local community comprises a whopping 71% of rounds played, while non-locals pay a bit more, with green fees being around $13 to $30 higher.
Beyond Just Golf
It’s not just about the greens. The renovations will also address fairway leveling to enhance playability, along with removing several hundred trees to allow for more light and airflow. Approximately 150 trees have already been cleared as part of this transformative process. The fairways and tees will be updated using Bimini Bermuda, a drought-tolerant and durable alternative to the traditional 419 Bermuda.
Committed to Improvement
Whispering Pines is part of a long-term agreement with the city for management and improvement strategies, showcasing a commitment to maintaining this course for future generations. Before this renovation initiative, previous investments amounted to around $357,000 focused on necessary improvements like cart path repairs and sand replacements.
Whispering Pines, which began its life as part of the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base back in 1962, continues to evolve. Between its military origins and the additional holes added in 1986, the course now boasts a par-72 layout that attracts locals and visitors alike. As Myrtle Beach continues to thrive as a top golfing destination, the excitement surrounding these renovations only adds to its prestige.
So, hang tight, golf enthusiasts! Whispering Pines will soon be better than ever, inviting everyone to come back and enjoy the well-deserved upgrades come September!
