Clemson, South Carolina – Golf Triumphs and Trials at The Honors Course
The Clemson golf team returned from the Invitational at The Honors Course with a mix of excitement and determination after finishing tied for seventh place out of 12 teams. The competition was fierce, featuring seven of the top 10 teams in the nation. Despite the tough field, Clemson held its own with a team score of 882, tying with Tennessee.
Lucas Augustsson Shines Bright
Leading the charge for Clemson was none other than Lucas Augustsson, who put on quite the show for golf enthusiasts. He impressed everyone by shooting a consistent three-under par 69 for the second consecutive day, bringing his total score to 213, which earned him a spot in seventh place in the individual medalist race. Notably, this performance marked Augustsson’s best finish of his Clemson career, surpassing his previous podium-like achievement of a third place at The Palmetto last year.
What made Augustsson’s performance even more remarkable was that he became the first Clemson golfer to shoot in the 60s in two rounds during the same tournament at The Honors Course. He showcased incredible skill on the par-three holes, boasting the second-best scoring average of 2.92 among 69 players. With a whopping 13 birdies to his name, he led the team in that department, providing a sneak peek into his remarkable golfing prowess.
Team Performance in a Tough Field
Mississippi took home the championship crown with an impressive team score of 10-under-par 854. The competition was tight for the podium spots as Virginia and Auburn finished tied for second at five-under par 859, closely followed by Vanderbilt and Oklahoma, who clutched the fourth and fifth places with scores of 862 and even par 864, respectively. Pepperdine rounded out the top six with a score of four over par 868.
Clemson’s performance was consistent with Oscar Bredkjaer providing solid support. Bredkjaer shot a 74 in the final round, securing a tie for 19th place with an overall score of 218. This marked his second consecutive top 20 finish, having previously finished 20th at the Myrtle Beach Classic. Notably, Bredkjaer had the best single-round score for a Clemson golfer during this tournament, shooting a stellar 68 in the first round. He exhibited remarkable skills with a team-leading average of 3.97 on par four holes, totaling 10 birdies throughout the tournament.
Completing the Roster
Rich Wills also made a commendable contribution as Clemson’s third-best golfer, finishing in 28th place with a total score of 221, including rounds of 69, 73, and 79. Wills displayed his own prowess by amassing 10 birdies and leading the team with the best average of 4.83 on par five holes.
Unfortunately, not everyone managed to finish in the top tier. Thomas Higgins concluded his journey in 58th place after a final round of 79, finishing with a total score of 233. Colin Salema wrapped up the tournament in 63rd place, posting a final score of 236.
What’s Next for Clemson?
As the dust settles from this challenging invitational, the Clemson team remains upbeat and eager to improve. Their next challenge awaits at the Bryan Brothers Collegiate, scheduled for September 29-30 in Columbia, S.C. This will certainly be an opportunity for them to build on their experiences from The Honors Course and aim for an even stronger performance.
