Evansville Community Remembers Wilburn “Mike” Sitzman

It is with heavy hearts that the community of Evansville gathers to remember Wilburn “Mike” Sitzman, a beloved figure who touched the lives of many. Mike passed away at the age of 86 on July 18, 2025, leaving behind a legacy that spans his family, his profession, and his hobbies.

A Life Well Lived

Born on March 21, 1939, in Evansville, Mike was raised by Rosedith (Wagner) and Wilburn Sitzman, both of whom have since passed. He graduated from Memorial High School in 1958, marking the beginning of a life filled with accomplishments. Shortly after graduation, Mike married his high school sweetheart, Betty Hayden, on July 22, 1961. Together, they celebrated an incredible 64 years of marriage.

Career Highlights

Mike enjoyed a remarkable 30-year career at Evansville Concrete, where he served as General Manager until his retirement in 1999. His passion for the industry was evident, and he played essential roles as president of both the Indiana Concrete Council and the Indiana Ready-Mixed Association. In recognition of his achievements, Mike received the prestigious E. B. Rayburn, Jr. Award in 1997 for Outstanding Achievement in Marketing Ready-Mixed Concrete, a testament to his dedication to his work.

Golfing Enthusiast

Outside of the concrete business, Mike was an avid golfer, spending countless hours on the greens. A proud member of the Thunderbolt Men’s Club, he favored playing at Thunderbolt Pass in Evansville and participated in an annual golf trip to Myrtle Beach for over 20 years. His passion for golf was mirrored in his membership with the Cambridge Men’s Golf Club, showcasing his love for both the sport and the connections he made along the way.

A Family Man

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Betty, and their four children: daughter Beth Goeltz, who is married to Tim Riess, and three sons, Mike Jr. (Tina), Mark (Sandy), and Scott (Kelsey Hillenbrand). His family reflects his kindness and values, including his grandchildren Megan and Ryan Goeltz, Logen, Hayden, Madelynn, Mason, and Lilian Sitzman, Brianne Irvin, Ryan (Rachelle) Irvin, Kylie Riess, Chloe, Cecilia, and Caroline Hillenbrand, as well as great-grandchildren Marnie Irvin and Carter Flynn.

In addition to his immediate family, Mike is survived by his sister, Deborah Thomas, brother, Greg (Vicki) Sitzman, sister-in-law, Julie Sitzman, and several nieces and nephews. Sadly, he was preceded in death by his brother, Gary Sitzman of Sealy, TX.

Community Support

The community joins the Sitzman family in mourning. Visitation will be held on July 23, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, followed by a memorial service at 7:00 p.m. On July 24, there will be a continuation of visitation from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at St. Benedict Cathedral, leading into the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. officiated by Father Bernie Etienne and Father Tempel. Mike will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Evansville.

Gratitude and Legacy

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Heart To Heart Hospice for their compassionate care and to physical therapist Chelsea Hartman for her support during Mike’s final days. They take comfort in their faith, believing that Mike is now with the Lord and happily reunited with family members who have passed before him.

In place of flowers, the family kindly suggests making memorial contributions to The Marfan Foundation and Tunnel To Towers Foundation, ensuring that Mike’s legacy of giving continues on.
