News Summary
Myrtle Beach recently witnessed local golfers Nick Lyerly and Davis Richards competing in the PGA Q-School Stage I. Both showed promise by advancing through Pre-Qualifying, but unfortunately fell short of advancing. With other impressive performances, the stage is set for exciting upcoming PGA events as aspiring golfers keep their dreams alive.
Myrtle Beach Gathers Round for Local Golfers in PGA Q-School
In the picturesque town of Myrtle Beach, two talented local golfers, Nick Lyerly and Davis Richards, recently made headlines as they put their skills to the test in the PGA Q-School Stage I Qualifying. Both athletes, who have deep roots in the area — Lyerly from East Rowan and UNC Greensboro, and Richards from South Rowan and NC State — gave it their all but fell just short of advancing to the next level.
The Journey Through PGA Q-School
Before facing the challenging Stage I, Lyerly and Richards successfully advanced through the Pre-Qualifying State of the PGA Q-School, a significant achievement in its own right. However, the excitement then turned to disappointment as they didn’t manage to make it past Stage I.
Nick Lyerly, after a hopeful start, scored a total of 290 with rounds of 73-69-71-77. His performance tied him for 55th place, unfortunately leaving him short of the cut line, which had been set at an impressive 279. Meanwhile, Davis Richards finished with a total score of 293, scoring 74-74-75-70 across four rounds, placing him in 66th overall. With only the top 19 players and ties moving on to the next stage, their dreams of advancing this time around came to an abrupt halt.
Meanwhile, Others Shine Bright
While our local talents battled hard, other golfers showcased outstanding skills during this competitive phase. Former Catawba golfer, Tanner Bibey, delivered impressive scores of 72-75-70-75 for a total of 292, just missing the cut but demonstrating his potential. Competitions like this serve as a reminder of the calibre of golfers hoping to break into the prestigious PGA Tour.
What Lies Ahead?
As the dust settles on Stage I with a total of 14 First Stage sites now concluded, the successful players have about six weeks to gear up for the Second Stage. That stage will take place from December 2-5, featuring four-day, 72-hole events at five key locations. And it’s not just a walk in the park; the excitement reaches a crescendo at the Final Stage set to unfold at TPC Sawgrass Dye’s Valley and Sawgrass Country Club from December 11-14.
In this climactic showdown, a sudden-death playoff will determine who claims the last spots as only five golfers from the entirety of Q School will earn a coveted card for the 2026 PGA Tour. Those finishing between 6th and 40th will receive Korn Ferry Tour status for 2026, keeping their professional dreams alive.
Notable Performances Elsewhere
We can’t overlook the remarkable performances from other contestants across the various stages. Recent tournaments saw RJ Manke of Champions Pointe Golf Club dominate with an impressive score of 19 under. At Country Club of Ocala, Ivan Camilo Ramirez and Luis Gagne tied at 16 under. Over at Bermuda Run, Brandon Berry turned heads with an astonishing third-round 61 to claim victory at 19 under.
Junior Golf Highlights
In addition to the intense professional qualifications, the junior golf community is also making waves. Young talents Avery Chen and Jiratarn Pornchai recently showcased their skills at the Florida Junior Tour’s Fairwinds Open, promising a bright future for golf enthusiasts in the region. With coaches and players from the Florida team competing at the Southeastern Challenge Matches, it’s an exciting time for college and junior golf alike.
As we send encouraging thoughts to Nick Lyerly and Davis Richards, let’s keep an eye on the golfing landscape as the season unfolds, with aspiring golfers aiming for their dreams!
