Exciting Times Ahead for Myrtle Beach with New Theatre!

Myrtle Beach, S.C. is buzzing with excitement as the city marks an important milestone for arts and culture. A brand new $22 million performing arts theatre is officially on its way to Downtown Myrtle Beach, further enhancing the vibrant Arts and Innovation District. This long-awaited project has been in the works for nearly a decade, and on a cheerful Monday, community leaders celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony.

New Beginnings for Myrtle Beach

Addressing an enthusiastic crowd of over 100 attendees, Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune shared her vision for the city’s future. She declared, “To me, today represents the dawn of a new and emerging Myrtle Beach; an elevated Myrtle Beach, with a beautiful arts and innovation district, where this is the catalyst for what is to come.” Her words painted a picture of hope and transformation, setting the tone for an exciting new chapter for the community.

Bringing Life to the Heart of the City

The mayor detailed the program’s inception, highlighting a pivotal moment when Coastal Carolina University (CCU) lost its theatre on 79th Avenue North. She recognized a need for a new space that could enrich the downtown area while also serving the university’s students. “Coastal needs a presence in downtown Myrtle Beach, and Myrtle Beach needs some new life,” said Mayor Bethune. “So, what can we do?” Now, the City of Myrtle Beach has teamed up with CCU, Monteith Construction, and LS3P Associates to breathe life into three historic buildings on Main Street, transforming them into a state-of-the-art theatre for the Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

Preservations and Innovations

Dr. Claudia Bornholdt, Dean of the Edwards College, was visibly excited at the ceremony, exclaiming, “You’re in for a treat Myrtle Beach!” The renovation will ensure that while the facility’s interior is modernized, many historic details from the original buildings will be lovingly preserved, ensuring the integrity of the city’s heritage isn’t lost.

A Hub of Entertainment

Once the theatre opens its doors, it’s set to become a bustling entertainment hub, promising to host hundreds of events annually. From live performances to film screenings, dance concerts, and engaging academic talks, there’s bound to be something for everyone! The rich blend of experiences is sure to draw in both locals and visitors, shining a spotlight on the incredible talent our community has to offer.

Student Enthusiasm Shines

During the groundbreaking ceremony, several aspiring performers from CCU were present, including rising sophomore Max McIntyre who expressed his excitement. He stated, “The Edwards College and Coastal Carolina uplift and stand for everything that is wonderful about the performing arts, and this project is another testament of that. I cannot wait to see what is created here; the possibilities are endless!” It’s clear that the young talents are buzzing with enthusiasm and eager to utilize this new venue.

What Lies Ahead

All eyes are on the construction crews, who are set to work tirelessly over the next two years to make this dream a reality. Officials are optimistic about a grand opening in summer 2026, promising a vibrant space for the arts that will breathe new life into Myrtle Beach. With this exciting venture, the community can look forward to a new gathering place for inspiration, creativity, and entertainment.
