Myrtle Beach: Queens on the Greens is Changing the Game for Women of Color in Golf
In the picturesque surroundings of Myrtle Beach, there’s a new wave taking over the greens, and it’s all about empowerment, community, and a little friendly competition! Welcome to the Queens on the Greens, a national organization aimed at lifting up women of color in the world of golf. While the skies may have been cloudy recently, the spirit among the members at the Wild Wing Golf Course in Conway was bright and hopeful—as they eagerly awaited their tee times, delayed by a passing rainstorm.
An Inspiration Sparks Change
At the heart of the Myrtle Beach chapter are founders Celisse Lundy and Rose Johnson. They took a brave step just last year to carve out a special space for women of color passionate about the game. Golf can seem like an exclusive arena, often associated with a certain stereotype of being a white, male-dominated sport. Lundy remembers those early days of being the only woman of color at various golf meetups, until eventually meeting Johnson. That chance encounter lit the spark that ignited this local chapter, bringing together women who share not just a love for golf, but a desire for inclusivity and camaraderie.
A Growing Community
Today, the network boasts nine Queens on the Greens chapters throughout the United States, with Myrtle Beach’s chapter actively hosting about 30 members who hit the links together four times a week. The ladies are known for their fun golfing sessions cleverly dubbed “Nine and Dine.” They play nine holes and then gather for a delightful dinner—what better way to mix sport with social life?
Member Linda Skillman is just one shining example of the energy that this group brings. She plays golf three times a week, embracing the fellowship that comes with like-minded women who genuinely enjoy an active lifestyle.
A Welcoming Space for All Skill Levels
Queens on the Greens isn’t just for seasoned players. This organization embraces women at all skill levels, offering coaching and lessons to help everyone elevate their game. As the members cheer each other on during play, you can hear encouraging shouts of “You go girl!” and “I see you Queen!”, creating a truly supportive atmosphere for everyone.
Founded for Community
Originally launched during the pandemic in 2021 by Angela G. Solomon, Queens on the Greens started with just four women who sought a community amidst the isolation. The need for connection grew, and now, with chapters in cities like Detroit, Maryland, Chicago, and North Dallas, this organization has truly blossomed. It seeks to highlight the significance of diversity and representation in sports, working hard to celebrate the achievements of Black women golfers.
Documenting the Journey
PBS took notice of this incredible movement and featured Queens on the Greens in a documentary titled “We Are Here.” It delves into the importance of diversity in sports and shares personal insights into the golfers’ journeys.
More Than Just Golf
Beyond just swinging clubs, the mission extends to creating lasting connections and promoting a healthier lifestyle. Membership benefits include discounted access to events, leadership opportunities, and ample networking options to help each woman thrive.
With dreams of expansion and a community that continues to grow and flourish, the excitement surrounding Queens on the Greens is palpable. From the greens of Myrtle Beach to all across the nation, this organization is more than just about golf; it’s about building friendship, fostering inclusivity, and empowering each woman to shine.
