Joey Ashley has been promoted to associate coach for the UTSA men’s golf program, a move announced Monday by head coach Matt Wernecke. Ashley previously served five seasons as assistant coach.
Coach Wernecke noted Ashley’s vital role in the program’s growth and improvement over the past four to five years, emphasizing his dedication to the development of student-athletes both as players and young men. Wernecke stated that the promotion is well deserved.
During Ashley’s tenure in San Antonio, the Roadrunners achieved 37 top-10 finishes, including the 2026 Military City Collegiate team title. The team also secured one individual victory and saw three players earn all-conference honors. Academically, UTSA has been recognized as a Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-Academic Team in each of Ashley’s five seasons. Individually, Roadrunners golfers have accumulated 10 GCAA All-America Scholar awards, three College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team selections, and 17 conference all-academic team certificates.
The Roadrunners are scheduled to begin their season from September 6-8, traveling to Myrtle Beach for the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate. This event will be hosted by Coastal Carolina University at the Grande Dunes Golf Club, a prominent course within the Grand Strand’s extensive golf infrastructure.
