Greens: Champion Bermuda

Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed The Dunes Club in 1949. Host of the 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic on the PGA Tour, six Senior PGA Tour Championships, and the Women's U.S. Open. Ranked #1 in Myrtle Beach and consistently in the top three courses in South Carolina.

2024 PGA Tour host. RTJ Sr. design. Consistently #1 in Myrtle Beach rankings.

Pro Tip
The 13th hole, 'Waterloo,' is the signature — 590 yards around Lake Singleton. Play it as a three-shot par-5; heroes who try to cut the corner routinely put two balls in the lake.

Greens: Bermuda

Mike Strantz's first solo design, opened 1994 on a former rice plantation in Pawleys Island. Consistently ranked in Golf Digest's Top 100 You Can Play. The oak-lined driveway to the clubhouse is one of the most photographed entrances in American golf.

Strantz's first solo design. Top 100 Public in America.

Pro Tip
Strantz built false fronts on nearly every green. Land approaches at the middle of the green, never the flag — anything short releases back into the fairway.

Greens: Bermuda

Mike Strantz's second Pawleys Island design, opened 1998, just up the road from Caledonia. Wider fairways, larger greens, and more dramatic waste-area bunkering than Caledonia. Considered by many Myrtle Beach regulars to be the tougher of the two Strantz designs.

Sister course to Caledonia. Larger scale, more waste-area design.

Pro Tip
True Blue's waste areas are hazards you can ground your club in — take the practice swing and read the sand grain before committing to the shot.

Tom Fazio designed TPC Myrtle Beach with input from Lanny Wadkins. Dustin Johnson's home course during his amateur and early pro years. Host of the Senior PGA Tour Championship. Championship-length course with dramatic elevation changes rare on the Grand Strand.

Dustin Johnson's home course. Senior PGA Tour Championship host.

Pro Tip
The par-3 3rd is the signature — downhill over water. Wind swirls between the pines; add one extra club and swing smooth to hold the green.

Greens: Bermuda

Ken Tomlinson design opened 1990. Eight holes play along the Intracoastal Waterway and Cherry Grove — one of the few Grand Strand courses with true coastal ocean views. Consistently ranked among the top public courses in the Southeast.

8 holes on the Intracoastal/Cherry Grove. Coastal wind exposure.

Pro Tip
Wind is the whole story at Tidewater. Play early — the 3rd and 12th holes along the Intracoastal are nearly unplayable when the afternoon sea breeze picks up.

Greens: Bermuda

Roger Rulewich (a longtime RTJ Sr. associate) designed the Resort Course at Grande Dunes. Championship layout stretching over 7,600 yards from the back tees, with commanding views of the Intracoastal Waterway. The 14th hole, on a bluff 80 feet above the Intracoastal, is one of the most photographed shots in Myrtle Beach.

7,618 yards from the tips. Bluff-top 14th hole.

Pro Tip
Play the correct set of tees. The gold tees at 7,618 aren't for tourists — the resort tees at 6,500 give you a fair test and preserve the Intracoastal drama.

Greens: Bermuda

One of four courses at Barefoot Resort (Love, Fazio, Norman, Dye). Davis Love III designed his course around simulated Southern plantation ruins as recurring features. The four-course complex is the largest single-owner golf resort on the Grand Strand.

Part of the four-course Barefoot Resort complex (Love, Fazio, Norman, Dye).

Pro Tip
Barefoot packages let you play all four courses. Start with the Love Course to warm up — it's the most forgiving. Save Norman or Dye for when your rhythm is dialed in.

Greens: Bermuda

Arnold Palmer's 1996 redesign of the original Myrtle Beach National course. Famous for 'The Gambler,' the par-5 6th hole with an island fairway — a classic risk/reward that gives every group a story to tell.

'The Gambler' par-5 6th hole. Arnold Palmer redesign.

Pro Tip
The Gambler's island fairway looks smaller from the tee than it is. From the men's tees, a 220-yard tee shot to the fat part of the fairway sets up an easy short-iron approach. Skip the hero line unless you're carrying at least 250.

Greens: Bermuda

'The Granddaddy of Myrtle Beach golf.' Opened 1927 as the first course on the Grand Strand. Robert White (co-founder of the PGA of America) designed the original layout; Craig Schreiner led a full 2009 redesign that preserved the historic character while modernizing playability. Sports Illustrated was reportedly founded at a Pine Lakes gathering.

First Grand Strand course (1927). Robert White (PGA co-founder). Schreiner 2009 redesign.

Pro Tip
The clubhouse serves clam chowder to every arriving group as tradition. Order a cup, walk out to the range, and start your round with the same ritual every Myrtle Beach golfer has followed for nearly a century.

Greens: Bermuda

Jack Nicklaus signature design opened 1988 on a former Pawleys Island rice plantation. Six holes play along the tidal marsh. The par-3 13th over the marsh is one of the most photographed one-shotters on the Grand Strand.

Jack Nicklaus signature design. Six holes on the marsh.

Pro Tip
Wind off the marsh is deceiving — trust the yardage book, not the tree tops. Nicklaus greens tilt from back to front; land the ball short and let it release.

Myrtle Beach Golf FAQ

Common questions about golf in the Myrtle Beach area, answered.
  • The First Tee of Greater Grand Strand also serves the region.

HERE Myrtle Beach Beach’s golf desk covers every course, every tournament, and every story relevant to golf in Myrtle Beach County and the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). Myrtle Beach is one of the most storied small golf towns in America — home to Palmetto Golf Club (founded 1892, the oldest course in South Carolina, redesigned by Alister MacKenzie in 1932, three years before he completed Augusta National) and Myrtle Beach Golf Club (1912, one of the oldest public courses in the state). Coverage spans the private layouts (Palmetto), the semi-private clubs (Houndslake Country Club, Midland Valley Country Club, Cedar Creek Golf Club, The River Golf Club in nearby North Augusta), and the historic public access at Myrtle Beach Golf Club.

Tournament coverage tracks the SC Golf Association events hosted at Houndslake, the Palmetto Golf Club Masters Week invitation events every April, SC Junior PGA events, Carolinas PGA pro-am stops, Carolinas Golf Association amateur championships at regional venues, and the SC High School League golf calendar for Myrtle Beach County programs (South Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach, North Augusta, Midland Valley, Silver Bluff, Wagener-Salley, and Ridge Spring-Monetta). Just 17 miles down the road, Augusta National and the Masters Tournament drive massive April golf tourism to Myrtle Beach — the town has been a winter colony for golfers, equestrians, and northerners since the late 1800s, and Masters Week remains the highest-demand hotel week of the year. Coverage also tracks course-condition reports after CSRA weather events from the National Weather Service Columbia office, club-pro hires, course renovations, and the small-business sponsorships flowing to junior-golf programs across Myrtle Beach County.
